Is there any place where it's legal to shoot between Mt. Hamilton and Los Banos?

Up in the hills SE of San Jose? I don't like ranges, I'd rather just go someplace and set up some cans and ventilate them. I've used Google earth to scope out the area but if someone knows a good place, I'm interested.

There is no public land in that area where you can shoot. Much of the area around and including the observatory is U.C. Berkeley property. You also have Grant Ranch County park, and Henry Coe State park. On top of that, the Santa Clara County Open Space Authority owns a lot of property, not all of which is shown on maps, nor is it open to the public. Then there's the United Technologies property off of Metcalf Rd., and the property the Packard foundation is/has purchased...

The bottom line is that there are some private lands that allow guided hunts for a fee, but unless you know the property owner, you are probably out of luck when it comes to target shooting.

There's BLM in Hollister where you can shoot. Calgunners go out there all the time.

Take care of the place. All we ask is that you pack out what you pack in.
last time I was there I had to blow up a concrete target stand someone left there. Yea... Made little rocks out of big ones.
If you see a blue Ford Ranger there with a blue tent, blue chair, white table and a silver EZ-up Stop and say Hi. If you see a white Jeep with a Ranger, be sure your runnin' CA legal. Enjoy! And keep your eye on the shoots meet and range stories forum for the next CG shoot there.
