Public Ranges Near La Mirada CA

The map is where they live so you have a general idea.

Ok so for xmas i figured id take my 2 cousins out shooting for a day. Now i live in Escondido near San Diego. So i have 0 clue on ranges near them(see map)

Preferably i want an open air public range, shooting my rem700 at 25 yards is EXTREMLY useless. And even if it is BLM land or in the Mountains, desert where people just go to shoot and arent jackasses about gun safety. And i dont mind a little drive from there. Lytle Creek is along the lines of what im looking for, but maybe closer to them if there is other wise it seems like it may work.

And ill also bring my 10/22 to get them started out to,

    Thanks for the help,
    Brent

Closest would be Insight shooting range in Artesia which only allows pistols, .22 rifles and shotguns and is indoor. Nearest outdoor range is probably Burro Canyon http://www.burrocanyon.com/ which has a 200yd rifle range.

Lytle Creek would actually be closer for you and it is still a distance. Burro Cyn is a good distance further for you up Hwy 39. If distance isn't a factor for you and it is for them, then Burro would be better I guess. If you want to cut down on your driving a bit, Lytle would be a lot better and not that much of a sacrifice for them considering you are coming from Escondido.

Lytle has 2 200yrd ranges. The 300yrd. range was closed due to the extreme fire hazard. I don't know if it has been re-opened. They are closed Tue/Wed. IIRC, it is only $13 for all day shooting and a few of the ranges have overhead metal shelters now, not that you have to worry about 100+ temperatures anymore. I've being going there for the last 5yrs. and really like it.

Tho Burro Cyn. in my old patrol area when I worked the Mtn. car, I never shot there, so I can't say anything about it other than a lot of members here have and like it.

Well im tihnking about going up when my family does xmas the 20th, we usually get together a few days before since there is like 40 or so people that show up.

And i looked them up on ggole maps and there is like a 10 mile difference between them from my Gmas house. but i know how traffic up there can be.

So i was thinking head up there in the morning drag my 2 cousins and be back in time for dinner/presents

So, which one; Lytle or Burro.

If you go to Burro, please let me give you some driving advice that I was given by another deputy when I first started driving the mountain car that covers all of 39 up to the top and East Fork. Actually we also covered all the way to Mt. Baldy Village and small part of that area near it.

He said, "Hug the fog line." He was referring to the thick white line along the right shoulder. The reason is, some fools coming down or even up the mountain, drive too fast for their abilities and end up coming over onto your side of the road. I had that occur many times after I drove up there by myself. If I hadn't been by the line, I would have been hit.

Also, if a road sign says curve coming up and it shows 20mph, do it. I saw more metal barriers on curves with black marks from vehicles and tires on same, that scraped against them because the drivers thought 20 was for others; they could handle 30 or more. Wrong.

Enjoy yourself whichever one you go to.

Im comfortable driving on dirt roads. done plenty of it in my ranger, but i also know those raods so i feel a little more comfortable on them.

But i will take your advice. not sure which yet cuz the Del Mar gun show is also saturday so im thinking of adjusting plans to like the 21st instead.

Don't know which dirt roads you are talking about as both are paved up to their location. I've never been inside Burro as I said, only drove by it while patrolling. I just know Hwy 39 is a winding mtn. road and a lot of people think they are race car drivers and drive beyond their capabilities and the capabilities of their vehicles. Not a good combination.

                Enjoy your shoot.
