    Colfax Range Unofficially Permanently Closed

I called the BLM Folsom office today to ask about the Colfax Range. The person I spoke to said that the range will be permanently closed. The BLM is planning to put a gate across the road to enforce the closure. He also said I was the third person in ten minutes to call about the range.

He was very supportive of target shooting and told me several times that shooting was allowed on all BLM land unless posted as closed. He told me that the BLM is looking for alternative areas to open a new shooting range in the Auburn/Colfax area. He even suggested that I get together with a group of people and politely urge the BLM to open a new target shooting area. If only I could find a group of people that like guns, and have an easy way to share ideas with each other.

One of these days I will get a BLM map and scout some of the areas close to home looking for a suitable spot. If anyone already has an area in mind for a "permanent" BLM range we should make a group effort to ask the BLM for help. Spenceville is fun, but I'd really like to have a closer "free" shooting area. If someone else already started this project please let me know how I can help.

Thats what they told me also. The man said they are having trouble finding a suitable location due to housing in the area being so spread out. I hope they find a place fast.

When was the last time that the BLM opened a new area to shooting?

From what I understand with the BLM is that all their areas are open to shooting, unless specifically prohibited. I think the BLM is willing to consider a designated shooting area if the area is already open to informal plinking. I still think it's worth a try.

Those of us on the I80 corridor shouldn't have to drive an hour to an hour and a half just to shoot at a free range.

It's still legal to go out and shoot off of Forest Hill Rd past the town and the 'no shooting' sign (I think so... don't call me if you get arrested).

Yes, it is still closed. I think the closest alternative is still Spenceville, unless someone can verify the Foresthill shooting spot.

On a side note, it doesn't look like you can shoot at Greenhorn Creek anymore, either. Apparently all the suitable shooting areas are private property.

The colfax range is overrated. There are way better places to shoot.

That may be, but it's hard to beat a 10 minute drive to go shooting, and no adult supervision.

Damn that sucks. Spencerville is hella crowded now. Need a closer place too.

I don't know what shooting range you guys are talking about off Foresthill Rd. I used to work in Foresthill.

Someone mentioned Greenhorn being closed to shooting, Greenhorn is closed to OHV now on the BLM side but the Tahoe side is still open for a little longer and i plan on going down there today. You can shoot anywhere in National Forest as long as your 100 feet from campsites and roads and your shooting in a good direction.
