    Manzanita Flats, Running Springs/Hwy 330 Cleanup 4/27/13

The time has come to clean up the Manzanita Flats target shooting area off of Hwy 330 just below Running Springs. This thread will be updated as the date nears and more information comes through.

The date has been set for 4/27/13

A representative from the Forestry Service will be there overseeing and assisting(possible additional manpower, tbd at this point 3/16)

We are currently working on getting a dumpster on site (3/16)

Trash bags and cans will be on site, but you can bring your own

Bring your own rakes and scoops if you can, wheelbarrows are a plus as well

From what I have heard it is mainly shotgun shells and targets that people have left, waiting for confirmation on that

    ---------------------------------------------------------------------------

The site is about 2 miles off of Hwy 330, before you get to Running Springs- Map here - http://www.fs.usda.gov/recarea/sbnf/...a/?recid=26615

I have never shot there, so I some of you may know more about the task at hand than I do, but I figure it cant be worse than the Glass Factory was last month. Anyone who has current pics/info on the condition, please chime in

Help spread the word to anyone near the San Bernadino / mountain areas.

This thread will be continuously updated as details come up

Your excuse to not make it is invalid, I'm coming up from Ventura

Do you have any pics? In your opinion, how much trash was there?

We will be with a rep from the Forestry Service.

The plan at this moment may be - rake up and bag/can up the trash and all, put it into the trucks, shoot a bit if we want, then haul the trash up the dirt road back up to the highway where the dumpster will be. (Plan might change, but that's it right now, the dumpster company isn't sure about hauling up and down the dirt road)

Sorry for the lag. There are multiple shooting areas along the trail. Coming from the 330, the first large area at the west edge of Manzanita Flats has quite a bit of trash. Mostly shotgun hulls, plastic bottles and some wood targets. About a 100 yards further, there was another area that had a plastiic barrel and another pile of shotgun hulls, The rest of the areas are fairly small and the trash would probably fit in a few trashcans each. The trailhead information says there are 16 areas along 5 miles of where you are authorized for target shooting. The USFS site says it is closed, but to call the Mill Creek Ranger station for information. They were in Activity level 3 so shooting had to stop at 1 PM. INFORMATION HERE

I will be at a meeting for the Adopt a Trail program tomorrow and can see if they are aware and might be able to get more information.

Wow, I thought that place was closed. I haven't been there in over 5 years. It was always a great place. Saw my first Bobcat out there too. I'm going to try to make it.

This is my local spot and I feel like the crying Indian from the 70's littering commercial. I always take a bag or two of trash out with me, at least the bud light cans and rake up more than I shoot. A burtech trash truck would not make it to the back areas, so shuttling to the hwy via pick ups will work. Mostly trash, no TV's, couches or fridges out there.

Here are a couple pics form yesterday afternoon.

I thought they USFS closed that place down completely 15 or so years ago! Where I started my plinking in life! My favorite place to go when I used to live in Highland that is!

I will be going to the Steele Peak (Perris, CA) cleanup that same date but I will watch this thread as I still have shooting buds in Highland!

Thanks for the pics Powerman, that brings it into focus a bit better. Doesn't look as bad as I've seen before, so it shouldn't take very long

Yeah, what kind of A--hole leaves their crap behind?? I always shoot steel and take anything else with me when I leave. Makes you wonder what their houses and women look like.

This is the worst of it, there are smaller areas clearly marked no-shooting that are flat and easily raked. Not only are they slobs but they are lazy or unable to drive another 1/2 mile to the area pictured.

I'll try to get down there with an ice chest of beverages, landscaping rake and show shovel.

Is this clean up still going down? I too thought this spot had closed permanently as stated earlier. I have a lot of memories from this spot. I'm very interested in helping out with the clean up
