Has there ever been an 80% build party in San Jose?

I've heard there are events in which a machine shop will set up a time where a bunch of people who've bought 80% lowers will mill them out, an "80% party". Anyone ever been to one?

This guy will come here with his mobile gunsmithing platform if we get enough people interested.

Considering what is happening to Ares Armory I don't know how many 'public' build parties there will be.

    Guns, and stuff.

Actually, that is what precipitates my inquiry. Now that we all know that even signing up for an 80% lower can end you up on a BATFE list, it makes sense that there will be a new breed of 80% lower providers who deal only in cash or there's some other assurance that the audit trail ends right there.

So, is there interest in moving forward on this? It is a question of moving forward, knowing that the paranoids were right after all.

        Sounds good

I'd potentially be interested. Living in Aptos but I'd drive over on a weekend some time. Currently only have an ep80 right now for my first ar I just started, but I'm tempted to just take all the parts off of it and do a metal lower instead. would be a pain in the *** getting the gun finished then finding out all of those lowers are getting confiscated (even thought there's nothing illegal with the way the two plastics are combined...) Maybe even just from a 0% block of metal unless somewhere sells reasonably priced metal 80s for cash.

I would be interested. But when I moved here over a year ago I sent some PM's about joining an AK build and got no response. Since then I have talked to a few people that indicated that the shooting sports folks are keeping to them selfs. Where I come from, we have regular social shooting events. Family, friends and good food.
But I cant blame the people of CA. With the insane raids on places like Ares, I don't blame them for keeping in their circle.

Well, I might have it figured out for an 80% .22lr revolver build, if you're interested.

              Revolver build?

That sounds interesting. Have not heard of that kind of build before. Where would one source the parts etc.
              Thanks,

Here is the best starting point.

The approach for that homemade revolver is very simple: no barrel to match up to. You could easily start that approach with a revolver cylinder from a known gun. You can even buy cylinders off ebay, which restricts gun sales.

The trick would be to get the longest cylinder you can. I would think that the Taurus 3" Judge cylinder is the longest I've ever seen. But that would make it a .45 caliber round. I wouldn't want to be shooting .45's from a homemade gun.

The 80% revolver might be a neat idea, but I'm not sure I like the idea of shooting a handgun like you'd start a pinball game. Also hand rotating the cylinder seems like a pain. Such a simple design like this could be fun to try improving on. Maybe use a 3D printer to make some simple gears and a ratchet that would advance the cylinder??

Also, for things like the large Taurus cylinder you mentioned would it be possible to make metal inserts for the chambers so you can fire smaller calibers? Or would doing that make it considered a zip gun?

Finally, I don't think that book would really be needed to make such a simple design, but my main concern is whether this would be considered a zip gun since it doesn't have a rifled barrel.

I had thought of that as well. Once I look into the mechanisms behind a basic revolver with a safety & double action, it makes me appreciate the level of design that has gone into these devices.

Yes. By inserting barrel liners. And such things would be rifled barrels, so they're not a "zip" gun... right?

I don't know. I know I can get to where I want from here, and it's all by way of buying gun parts & doing some simple machining I learned in 8th grade. The law says if you build your own gun, it's legal. But such a law can be quickly changed, especially here in California.

Well, if you insert a rifled barrel liner into a cylinder, it's no longer a zip gun, right?

A friend handed me an 80% AR lower for my last birthday, it's collecting dust, and I'd like to do something with it before someone manages to ban it.

I've got several college certificates in machining, and I've got the tooling to do it, I just don't have the machinery. I don't suppose anybody just happens to have a mill sitting in their garage I could borrow, do they?

edit: I should clarify that I had already legally purchased a AR lower from Metal Dog Tactical, when this was given to me. I have no problem showing my purchase ticket, ID and lower in person. I know guys can be touchy about this, particularly with a new user such as myself.
