Sorry to respond so late. There is lots of USFS and BLM land in the area. Contact the ranger stations, they will know the rules. Stay away from state parks (obviously Calaveras Big Tree!), and private property.

If you are interested, there are also good motorcycle (dirt bike) and ATV trails in the forest. Unfortunately, some of the best trails are reached over public roads (or are even considered public roads), so you may need a plated bike, and can't use an ATV.

I got a BLM map of the area but it's kinda hard to tell what areas shooting is allowed. I think I might try calling a LGS in Angels Camp and see where they recommend going.

I'm actually bringing my motorcycle too and plan on going to Black Springs OHV, which is about 10 miles from Big Tree. Should be a fun-packed weekend of shooting and riding.

Well all that area around Big Trees is National Forest not BLM. You should find plenty of good places scouting around. Get a Stanislaus National Forest map. Call the Ranger office for any road closures and prohibited places to shoot. Many roads are seasonally closed.

i have a house next to the park. if you haven't already gone send me a PM and i can show you where to shoot. there isn't a name for the place. there is a primitive range on USFS land many people use not far from the park. adjacent to the park is a neighborhood so you can't shoot there.

Is Candy Rock still open? Avery/Hathaway Pines area. I remember they were looking at limiting hours and such.

Candy rock is open just not on Sunday. I've never been there though. I always prefer the forest where I don't have company. Less people means less worries for me!
