Any handgun caliber with a 4 in it should be fine.WARNING: This post will most likely contain statements that are offensive to those who lack wit, humor, common sense, and or maturity.

Get a Glock 19...almost every firm uses them..However your only 20yrs old, so check to see if you can get the Armed Guard Permit first. Then the gun store is going to want your parents to sign for you. Gotta be 21 to buy a gun in CA.sigpicComment

Security handgun
Once you turn 21, you cant go wrong with a Glock in .40 or 9mm. .40 preferred. I would try to find a 3rd generation Glock, as opposed to the current 4th generation. Some gun stores still have them brand new. There are minor differences that most people would not notice that make 3rd gen guns a bit more rugged. A Glock will last you a lifetime.Comment

My advice is to stick with what the professionals (LE) use. Within what is likely to be a security guard's budget, that would mean something along the lines of a Glock, Springfield Armory XD, or the Smith & Wesson M&P, 9MM or .40S&W.
There are others, but within the range of reliable, polymer frame mid caliber pistols, those are probably the three that have broad LE acceptance (meaning their reliability and performance has already been vetted and is well established.)
I personally prefer SIGs and HK's, but they will cost you a lot more, and since you are fairly new to handguns, you'd be better off spending that extra cash on ammo and training.Comment

Also note that depending on the security company, due to company policy, they may limit the caliber and type of handgun that they allow.
All armed security companies allow 4" barrel .38Special revovlers.
Almost all armed security companies allow full-sized 9x19mm DA/SA or DAO pistols.
Since, you are under 21 years of age, in order to get a handgun...
... Your parents will have to purchase & gift a handgun to you or (rarely happens now a days) your security company will issue out a handgun (.38Special revolvers).Last edited by Quiet; 11-06-2011, 5:39 AM.sigpic

I am 20 With a guard card and i carry the Glock 17, Glock 22 and Springfield 1911. You need to have your mom or dad purchase the weapon and do a family transfer into your nameComment

First of all, just let the company tell you what they want. It's a job and you have to play by their rules. Then, when you want to learn more about firearms, hang out here and learn as much as you want to. You might be surprised how many "experts" don't know what they are talking about (see below). So, read and reread threads until you get a concenseous or, at least, a majority opinion from posters who you believe are in the know.
Really? I have a friend who loves subcaliber stuff. He shoots .12 and .14 caliber handguns while his wife competes with the 50BMG he had built up a few years ago.
Says who? It is perfectly legal for anyone 18 years and older to OWN a handgun.Last edited by CSACANNONEER; 12-28-2011, 3:11 PM.NRA Certified Pistol, Rifle, Shotgun and Metallic Cartridge Reloading Instructor

depending on your work, different armed co. prefer dif guns but one of the most used is the p-95 -> it has a safety & de-cocker on the slide and is reliable and inexpensive for a decent 9mm pistol. just remember to get the +P+ Jacketed Hollow Point (JHP)
wait till your of age also, in ca 21 to buy a handgun, 18 to buy a long gunI mainly shoot .22lr, 9mm,45 acp, 357 & 38, 12G, 7.62x39, .308, .223/556, 7.62x54r, 300 win mag, 8x57God Bless USAComment
