A friend of mine casually mentioned that she'd like to try shooting sometime, but the idea terrified her. We set a day for it, and at the house I went over the safety briefing and familiarized her with the different guns we'd be shooting and how they work.
At first, she was shaking, even holding one of them she was visibly nervous and couldn't put it down fast enough. We went to the range, and her first couple of shots she flinched a bit, but then relaxed. By the end of the hour, she was giddy and couldn't wait to go back and saved her targets to show people.
Yesterday I took her a second time, and we shot my Sig P320 9mm I'd picked up the night before. At 12 yards she outshot me at 7 yards, getting 2" groups with remarkable consistency. Not only is she anxious to go again, she even said "what gun was that again? I think I want one of those for myself..."
Best of all, when she was shooting better than me, I had zero ego about it. I wasn't pouting, or grumbling about 'beginner's luck'. I was just so proud and happy that she found joy and skill in something I enjoy.
Now she's going to help me get some of the other women in my circle involved. Winning hearts and minds!
