    Female instructor in Ventura/Simi/West SFV?

    Hi, all!

I'm a new shooter (1 year), so far handguns only. Have a Glock 19, Sig P226 Elite Stainless, and HK VP9, all in 9mm, and an S&W M&P22. I'm been shooting pretty darn well up to about 30 feet. But my older farsighted eyes make it tough to see the front sight and shoot good groupings out at 50 feet.

Can anyone recommend a female instructor in the Ventura/Simi or West San Fernando Valley area? Have not been able to attend any of the WOT Pistol classes yet, but I'd prefer to do some sort of one-on-one instruction first if possible.

I've looked through the archives but haven't found anyone in my area. My LGS/range has wonderful RSOs, but they're all enormous guys who might not get the whole upper body strength thing.

Any direction or thoughts would be much appreciated.

(Really, CSA? Not all that helpful...)

ValleyM, I suggest you get in touch with Ricky-Ray, the Calguns Women on Target Coordinator. He's bound to know the women instructors in each SoCal local area, or be able to find you someone who does. PM him and I'm sure he'll help. He's a busy guy, may not get back to you the very next day, but he will respond.

Failing that, PM me personally and I'll help you find out

          Bonnie,

I've really been looking for more info about the female teacher I remember. I can't find her now so, maybe my google fu is weak or maybe she moved. I have been in contact with the OP. At least my post made me come back to this thread this morning and, I looked in a different place for a local female instructor and found one here:

I do not know anything about Deborah but, she is obviously a credentialed instructor.

There is a lady at shooters paradise in oxnard that does it. She might be the owner.

Island View in Ventura use to have a Ladies Only class, I believe it was on Thursday evenings. Give them a call. If you have not been there, it is a real nice indoor range.
                Good luck,
                Bill

Up at Ojai Valley Gun Club there's a gal who (mostly) lives up there, who I know is an NRA certified instructor/range officer. Name is Nina.

I'm not sure how you'd contact her other than to go on a weekend, she's always there. Be ready to talk because she's long on conversation. She was a big help with my daughter shooting iron sighted 22lr at 100 yards.

Would Burbank be to far out?

Ricky-Ray, the CGSSA Women on Target Coordinator does have a list of all our instructors but don't be surprised if you get a list of males and not females, most (99%) of our current instructor base is male.
I could if you would like reach out to the Master Instructor that trains all my instructors and ask him for a recommendation or if Burbank is within a Friday night driving distance, I could also connect you with one of my team leaders in that area that happens to be an excellent WOT instructor for CGSSA.

Is she a shorter, older lady? If so, I think I met her at a gunshow a few years back and my first impression of her is that she is a very experienced shooter, nice and extremely passionate about teaching the shooting sports.

Myself (TO), Intoforever (SFV) and ChambeCheck (Simi) are the three CGSSA volunteer WOT instructors that I know of close to the OP. But, we are all males. I've been in contact via PMs with the OP and she is really hoping for a female instructor if she can find one.

Hey, everyone - I really appreciate all of the great suggestions and referrals.

Here's my plan: I will contact Deborah in Oxnard next month, when my schedule frees up. I will keep Ojai Nina in mind as a backup.

Bill, I'll ask at Island View next time I'm there. That is my "home range", and I like it very much. Everyone there is really nice and super helpful. RSOs Jim and Fred are great, and I know they teach, but honestly! They both look like they were defensive tackles and press 300 lbs with their little fingers.

Pennys dad, Burbank would be acceptable on a weekend. But, to dovetail nicely with another thread on this forum, I work at a local state university. It is totally illegal for me to have any firearms on campus, including locked in my car all day. Not to mention dumb, with all the campus car break ins. No way for me to get home and then back to Burbank at a reasonable hour.

BonnieB had also suggested that I contact Ricky-Ray for referrals, which I may do later.

Again, thanks to everyone for your help!

That's who I would also recommend. Disclaimer - I am not affiliated with ITTS but trained with Brett and Scott when he (Scott) was still a SWAT shooting instructor. I've sent a PM to the OP with details.

Unfortunately I don't know of any female instructors in the SFV area. The few female instructors that I have for Women On Target are from the OC area or even further south.

Maybe try contacting TJ Johnston from AllSafe Defense (http://www.allsafedefense.com/), he's pretty much the go to instructor to teach new instructors. Perhaps he know's someone.
