Tonight we had our Ladies' Night. I took two brand-spankin' new shooters with me and we had a ball. The first minutes of registration terrified them; they could hear the gunfire and suddenly they wanted to leave. They couldn't fathom firearms being willfully discharged in their very presence. To their credit, they hung with me and we made our way back to the indoor range.
A brought her Glock 17, which her husband had purchased and which she had never fired. We had discussed The Four Rules in the car, so I helped her put them into practice and showed her how to load and unload a gun. Until tonight, she had believed no mag = unloaded and had dry fired that way at home. She was horrified when she learned about a hot chamber. A is a former anti-gunner, it should be noted. She used to believe she would just die if someone broke into her home and she'd call it good and meet Jesus in heaven. Then 9 months ago she had her first child and all that willing-victim nonsense flew out of her head. She said, "I would kill for her. I need a gun."
A almost gave up before she started. The noise, seeing recoil, anxiety over other shooters firing on either side of us...it was too much for our little pacifist. When I showed her recoil was not painful and that I could do it one-handed, she decided to try. My rainbow Sig was small and pretty, so it won her over and she fired it. That took the fear away, so she wanted to learn to load and fire her Glock. She caught on immediately and obeyed The Four Rules very well. She blew through most of her 100 rounds and said with an ear-to-ear smile, "Ok, I think I could call this fun."
W brought her husband's Smith & Wesson .38 special revolver with crimson trace. She tried and liked the Sig first, then fired A's Glock and liked that also. We fired her gun and none of us liked it. W was a good shot with it, but that stiff trigger pull and tiny grip just couldn't compare to the fun of A's brawny Glock or my charming Sig.
We left at closing time with A asking if we could commit to this once/month and W deciding she will take the concealed carry class and choose her own gun. They posted their pics on FB themselves and everyone is sending them such positive comments. More are asking to come with us next trip. This was a raging success.
On a final and funny note, rewind to me driving to A's to pick her up. I had sent a text to say I was on my way to get these women and a message flashed across my screen, "I'm ready!" and a pic of A in her Obama "Hope" shirt. I replied, "I'm here. Change NOW!" She obliged, and away we went. Winning them over, one at a time.Comment

Keep up the great work! I am a firm believer that women teaching women can overcome preconceived bad notions that arise from the media and from how their husbands, boyfriends, or brothers shoot. No offense to the guys, but we ladies have a completely different learning style that does not necessarily mesh with "the just pick it up and fire it (safely)" trademark of the male gender. (We like DETAILS!)
As GG's range trips indicate, the first step to enjoying shooting is allowing the shooter to choose for themselves which firearm suits them best.Comment

GG, that is a fantastic story; thank you for sharing. My mom was convinced in a similar manner. Even though I had firearms (and she wasn't opposed to them) it just wasn't something she was interested in. Then a lady at church mentioned being a firearms instructor and it piqued my mom's interest. We ended up discussing the different types of handguns, went through the 4 safety rules and eventually went to the range together. She loved it and did great. This lead to my niece becoming interested and I eventually took her to the range as well.
I think there is something about seeing other women shoot that connects in a different way than seeing men shoot. I applaud you for taking a risk and posting on FB, then going further and taking them to the firing range. You are a great ambassador for liberty and self-reliance!Comment

I am in the process of getting my CCW. I've had my interview, waiting for the BG check to complete and get my range date scheduled. My family knows this. I joined the local gun club so I could shoot on my own without worrying about my BF's schedule to go out with him. I pondered in quite awhile and finally decided to join because they have an archery range as well and my son really enjoyed archery in Boy Scouts and wanted to continue. He has a long bow but no real place to shoot it. The range has open archery twice a month so we started going, my step-son came along as well and then asked for a compound bow for christmas. So now it's a "thing". The last range day ended up on Valentine's day. My son was debating going because he wanted to spend it with his girlfriend. I suggested he bring her to archery. In my mind, archery and valentine's day go together. Cupid's arrow and such. He misunderstood and thought they were having some kind of valentine's event at the range and we all set it up. When I told him it was just a regular archery day, but would probably be a light crowd because of the holiday, they agreed to still go.
His girlfriend REALLY enjoyed the archery and will be coming with us every time now. And while we were sitting around the picnic tables at the range eating lunch after the shoot, we started talking about my CCW and the two guns I own. That lead to the Women on Target class that is coming up in March. I was planning on skipping it since I've already been, but she seemed interested so I invited her. Her eyes lit up and she seemed quite giddy about the concept. We are going together on March 22. This class takes the women through the safety plus hands on shooting with Pistol, Rifle, Shotgun, and Trap.
She mentioned that her mother doesn't really like guns and I asked if she would be able to go. She said that since the event will be safety conscious with instructors, etc., her mom would have no trouble allowing her to go. I can't wait. And maybe we'll be able to bring her mother with us to one of the events as well.Last edited by brekkke; 02-21-2015, 10:10 AM.Comment

^^^ Excellent brekkke! Thank you for sharing your story too.
What women on target do you attend (area), if you don't mind me asking.
This thread is full of win.

I am in the high desert and attend the Apple Valley Gun Club Women on Target events. They also have monthly Women's Clinics sponsored by the club the 2nd Friday each month. It alternates between Pistol and other topics. January was Gun Cleaning, February Pistol, March How to not be a victim, April Pistol, May Trap, June Couples Pistol (that should be fun), July Rifle, August Pistol. The club volunteer coaches bring all their guns so the women get to try a variety of different types and models to see what fits. It is always one-on-one coaching. I encourage any women in the High Desert area to attend. They start at 6 with dinner and are usually done by 9. They are really fun and informative. I've met several women who are now my friends.Comment
