    Gunsmith Recommendation Please

    Hey Ladies

I know there are other locations for this thread and I have sifted thru many, but my mood at this point does not allow for the "i can fix that in my garage!" type of response. To put it mildly, my favorite range pistol has gone from fantastic to too dangerous to shoot. What happened? Well, I hit the 10,000 round mark and took her in for a spa day of inspection and full cleaning. I have no clue what they did, nor do I care at the moment.

I need to find a good gunsmith that hopefully you have used personally and recommend the work you received. Los Angeles - Santa Barbara is the preferred travel zone but I can do the OC too.

    Thank you in advance~

wow, I hope you share who did the "spa day".....and i'm sorry I don't have any recommendations.

eta: a shop cannot be all things to all people. gunsmiths do move around and hopefully someone will recommend one.

Some shops specialize in a particular type of firearm. Doing great work on what they know, but so-so on the other stuff. It would help to know what brand/type you need done...

In general, Bolsa Gunsmithing in OC does solid work on many types. They are a factory authorized repair shop for many big name manufactures.

Also take a hard look at sending the firearm back to the maker for work. They are frequently used to rebuild stuff back to like new, and you have the assurance that it will be done right. Sending the firearm via FedEx or UPS and the time involved is the downside to this route.

                  Thank you all

It is a Ruger SR22. Sad because the only reason I took it in was the round count (10k) and wanting pro-eyes to inspect and clean her up. About 80 rounds in I noticed some scuffs on the top back of my mags (I told myself I had just been unobservant before - but my gut disagreed). 30ish rounds later I got a face full of sharp shards on an eject (ALWAYS wear your eye protection kids!). I dumped my mag/ammo and stripped the slide to discover the inside frame covered in metal dust and the slide finish worn to bare metal. All that in under 200 rounds from being picked up. I can appreciate smiths specializing in certain weapons but never did I expect such failure in just a full strip and reassemble.

I am leaning very strongly toward having the shop get it to Ruger for me and they can fix the finish on my mags for me while it is out. Oh, and I think a refund for the smithing work is in order too!

I would still like the Santa Ynez info please, and any other suggestions for my future needs. Besides the Ruger I have a couple CZs and a CMMG 9mm AR -the gents can clear long range and I'll cover close quarters ; )

Ruger is very good about fixing guns. If the shop you had do the work won't send it into Ruger on their dime, I would just contact Ruger directly and politely explain the situation. Best of luck!

                      Hey Chickshooter,

My sister is hiking and should be back home the middle of the week. I will talk to her then if it isn't to late for you.

That is fine Savannah, thank you.

Hey Beetle - you are correct, and I am lucky that Ruger stands so strongly behind their products.

While they will not "officially" say the problem occurred because of them, the shop has said they will overnight the gun to Ruger, and will absorb any cost of making the situation "right."

Ruger stands by their product, I would advise to call them first and speak with them and see what they have to say. http://www.ruger.com/footer/contact.html Remember you dont need a dealer to send it to a manufacturer for repair. And if there is cost involved that's where you can send the bill to the so called SPA SHOP!!... Good luck in finding someone close to you if not im In OC..

I agree that Ruger should stand by its product. I was looking at one of those models before I ended up with a Walther P22. The gunsmith I use is up north, but as with all folks, he may do the "shipping doctor thing" if that is an option for you.

His name is Craig Maraviov: (530) 668-4867.

                            Good luck
