Need A Holster

I bought the wife an S&W 686 4" for Christmas last year. Now, she says she needs a holster. She has only shot the gun once, and may never use the holster, but she takes good care of me, and it might be something nice for the kids to give her for a present.

So what do you ladies prefer? I know nothing about them, so tell me what I need to know. Price isn't an object, within reason.

What's the purpose? Concealed carry? Action pistol? Leather? Kydex?

Might be best to give her a gift certificate to your local gun store and let her try a few and then choose.

My experience is that people wind up with a box full of holsters before they find just the right one. And also, you use different ones for different purposes. What works for Action Pistol will probably not work for concealed carry on a woman's body. And a proper holster belt is a necessity.

There are plentiful threads here on the Women's Forum on the in's-and-outs (so to speak, punning away) of holsters for women. Since we are curvy, what works on a man's straight up and down body will not necessarily work for a woman. Search the Forum on 'concealed carry' and you'll learn a lot.

But then, there is the allure of black leather....

It will be most likely a token holster. She may never wear it, but she wants one and that's good enough for me. If she could, she'd probably wear it to the grocery store when people bring their little kids and let them run wild. I'll probably look for something black leather.

Well, I spend a few days snooping around and looked a almost everything I could find. Saw some really nice stuff, but some a little pricey for what use it will get. Spotted these puppies, and decided to go with this one:

I'll get one in black. It should look nice with the stainless 686 and black grips. She will probably rarely use it, but she asked for a holster after getting the gun. I was going to just get a black basket weave pattern until I saw this. I ran it past both kids (in their 20s) and they like this one, so that's that. She'll like the "exotic" flaire to it, I hope. I'll order it tomorrow so there's no question about having it in time for Christmas.

The holster showed up this week. Looks like top quality, nice double stitching, and nice soft suede inside. I was going to take a photo, but something else came up.

I knew she'd need a new belt, but she's in the process of dropping a few pounds right now, so I didn't want to spend a whole bunch on a belt that might not fit in a few months or year. I was just going to go to Wallymart for now and buy something to get her by. Then yesterday I was snooping on ebay, and I found a lady's belt, black leather, 2 1/4" wide, with a 3/8 wide (?) python insert down the center. Looks like it will match the holster perfectly. I bought it, so it should show up late next week. If it looks OK, I'll snap a photo of the pair. If the belt looks too tacky, I'll give it to my sister. She likes that kind of stuff!

I put it all away for now, waiting for Christmas.

Now, if I get her a black garter belt, leather boots, and a whip, we can play Game Warden and Escaped Convict!!
