    Gift

So, my girlfriend of what is close to six months just received her MA. I was unable to attend her graduation because I do not have the money to fly out or the ability to speak work. Although she says otherwise, I am positive that she is bent out of shape about it, so I want to make it up to her somehow. She has just about everything, has done quite a bit, and comes from a very well off family, so trying to find her something she does not already have is a pain.

I am not to the point of buying her jewelry yet, since I like to think that takes a certain amount of time and emotional investment to get to. She is not a very big fan of firearms, yet accepts my ownership and perspective. My budget is somewhere in the neighborhood of $75-$100. Flowers were already sent. And we're going to baseball game once she returns, although that's been planned for quite some time.

I appreciate the help, ladies. Guys are welcome to chime in as well.

I'm prepared for a serious lashing here but here goes... If she is bent out of shape that you have responsibilities and not the ability to take time off work(or finances I am guessing) then she is going to be more trouble later on. Then again, that is just me. I don't judge my husband by how much time he spends with me or what he buys me or how pricey his gift to me is(I was THRILLED with my uplula, I'm easy to please). I don't know what you could do for her to make it up to here because you have already sent flowers and she needs to understand real world people, not those that are well off.

I honestly wouldn't expect more than some flowers but again, that is just me. Good Luck. Perhaps some specialty cupcakes? There are a LOT of cupcake shops around our area. I am not sure if she likes sweets or not. Does she have a favorite movie? Mine is Gone with The Wind and my husband bought me the Anniversary edition which came with all kinds of memorabilia from the making of the movie. It was like $65 on Amazon. Is she a fan of reading? Perhaps a Nook or Kindle or something like that? Sorry, I am not much help.

i'm with Bugs. flowers were the congrats present and i'd have appreciated the heck out of them.

Now? a big welcome back hug and kiss, back rub, absolutely fab dancing between the sheets, foot massage, some wine/cheese/crackers, etc. should do it if its meant to be.

real people have real jobs and real commitments made prior to the commencement of a less than 6-month relationship. if things is "her thing" you're better off knowing now.

however, perhaps her emotions run deep and she expected an e-ring?

Bugs and MZ are right. Now remember, this is the "grown up woman's " point of view, not the 20-somethings take.

If your girl is a student and has never worked, she isn't going to get it that you can't just take the week off to fly around the country. If she's a lot better off than you, she won't get it that you can't just jump on planes and buy diamond earrings. And remember if you go, there's a built-in "meet the parents" thing going on.

I would take it real slowly with this girl, she doesn't sound like she comes from your world. And just for laughs, listen (all the way through) to Tim McGraw's "It's a Business Doing Pleasure with You"

BUT your question was "what's a nice thing I can do when she comes home". My answer would be a nice dinner at her favorite place, and when the (inexpensive) glasses of champagne are served, give her a one-man heartfelt standing ovation, right there in the restaurant, in front of god and everybody. She'll be a little embarrassed, but she'll remember it her whole life.

I'm with the others on this one - the flowers were gesture enough. It's a college graduation and her second one at that. A gift is not required. Take her to a nice dinner when she gets home and call it a day.

I have already flown out to see her twice, although not at great expense. I think that your idea is good, and I might just roll with that. Someone else mentioned reading; she is going into publishing, and my first gift to her was a set of first edition novellas by Edith Wharton. They cost me virtually nothing, although I am well aware of how pricey they actually are.

I am a very simple man, and have never believed that gifts are a reciprocal matter. But I would like her to appreciate, or at the very least understand the world I come from.

                  Many thanks, ladies.

I think you've certainly showed your respect and interest in her, especially for such a short-time relationship. your desire for her to appreciate and/or understand the world you come from is reasonable. it is time for her to reciprocate the Respect..........
                    good luck!
