What is "the wife" ?

Can someone explain to me why guys refer to their SO as "the wife"?

Why not "Sandy", "Sandy, my wife", "BW", "my wife"?

What is a "THE wife". Do they have the only wife in existence?

I ask because I've never heard a woman say "THE husband".

As far as I am concerned yes, she is the ONLY Wife in existence for me hence the singular reference.
Also why do people refer to their employer as 'the boss' instead of 'my boss'?
Same thing, it's just a manner of speaking.

My Wife uses this term all the time when referring to me to friends.

I usually say "my wife," but I am sure that I have used the reference "the wife". The is used for singular and as term of endearment. Imagine how my wife would react if I said "one of my wives..." atleast if I say "the" it is singular. To me I do not see it as derogatory, the last time I used it went something like this "I have to get going because it is time to eat and the wife is an awesome cook." And that is not a insult saying she is in the kitchen where she belongs. She likes to cook, and I like her cooking and do everything I can to be encouraging. I don't know if anything I just wrote makes any sense, I am not running on much sleep.

I don't take "the wife" as horribly insulting, but it does seem to "second class" her.

But I do find "my bride" absolutely charming.

I don't have an opinion on "the wife" but I have never heard my husband refer to me as that and I know I have never referred to him as "the husband". He has a name and so do I. If he chooses not to use my given name, he can refer to me as The Goddess. LOL

Now my sister and I used to get irritated at our Uncle David because when he would talk to us and talk about our sons, he would refer to them as "the boy" whoever he was talking about. They were all interchangeable as "the boy" and we used to think he just didn't like them(my Uncle is pretty ornery so it wouldn't be unusual) until his only grandson was born and he DOTES upon that little boy and he calls him, yep you guessed it, "the boy". LOL

I don't know if she's OK with me using her name in an online forum, so I don't. I'm also not going to ask, "Is it OK if I use your name when I talk about or refer to you online?" Maybe you all don't care, I don't know. I'd rather not find out afterwards that you do
I try to use "the Mrs." though, if that's any better?
