She lives On a large piece of property in st Helena. She runs the fire roads every morning. There have been mountain lions sighted in the area. I told her she should run with a pistol. Any of you ladies carry while running?

First a CCW. Depending on the county where she lives, she may not get one. Wouldn't even carry without one. On her own property, the rules are different but you say Fire Roads and those are public land so she can't legally carry without a CCW there.

Going on 4mos since I applied. Have been approved, did livescan, class and turned in targets, now just waiting for the call to pick it up.

if fire roads on her own property she would be ok to open carry loaded w/o any CCW requirement. however, she certainly would NOT want to be on anyone else's property or public land.

bear spray?

if she's running a moutain lion might see her as prey....and by the time she sees the mountain lion she might be up close and way to personal with it to even draw a gun.

Private property. If you don't have time to draw a pistol you won't have time to pull bear spray.

A. If there are cougars or bear, she shouldn't run alone.

B. If she can't do legal concealed carry, she shouldn't carry.

C. No typical concealed carry size weapon is going to stop a cougar or bear, except for scaring them with the sound of the shot.

I think the lady is at risk out there, but being free to do such things is maybe why she's in St. Helena.

Bonnie, she's on private property and has no obligation to conceal carry.

personally i don't think a gun on a runner is a great option but could be wrong.

for a hiker? yeah, its one of the reasons i got my little smith & wesson model 60.....

but dang those cats are great at hiding, observing and so very very quick.

i hope she is NOT running at dusk or dawn.....prime feeding times.

Perhaps us men have a tougher row to hoe in this area, but the "carry while running" part is a lot easier said than done.

I have yet to find the "tactical" pair of track pants which have belt loops in them.Without those, attaching a conventional holster is impossible-and without a holster any pistol placed in your waistband during a brisk run is going to hit the ground. When I run on the treadmill at the local gym, I do so unarmed. Few things will break the mood faster than a loaded 1911 falling onto a treadmill at 7.0 MPH.

The closest I can get to CCW in exercise attire is off-body carry in a backpack as I run, but the gun is of course inaccessible at that point.Against a human drawing it is a dicey proposition, and against an animal uninterested in stalling conversation off body is all but a useless method.

My words of advice:grab a gym membership.

PS:If you ladies come up with a way to effectively hide a handgun on the waist while running with those skin tight spandex setups yall wear, please pass on the secret.

the good news is she doesn't have to hide it.
the bad news is that any place she puts it on her body is going to make it hard to draw, then aim, and then fire. and running with a loaded gun in hand just doesn't make a lot of sense nor does that seem safe at all.
the whole point of living in the bush is to be able to be out in it....of course, being out in the bush does mean some amount of risk.
the best advice above was from Bonnie: don't run alone.
heck, aren't their wild boars up there as well? those are really mean beasties.

Yes, a woman running was actually killed by a cougar in the American River Canyon area (Auburn, I think) in 1994. She was alone.

A cougar with a cub was loose in my neighborhood in Fair Oaks, right by the American River Parkway, in the early 90's and was scaring us all to death with her screaming at night. (We thought some woman was being beaten at first. It sounded just like that.) The cougar didn't attack anyone as I remember, but she was killed in the process of being captured. Her cub was rescued, raised and eventually released.

I think it's a really bad idea to run alone anywhere there are deer present. In fact, I think it's a bad idea for women to run alone period. But I understand the freedom and solitude, I do.
