Does the grip safety bother you?

I have a Springfield XD9 Tactical. Prior to this, Ive never experienced a grip safety; I figure the more safeties the better... However; after shooting it, Im beginning to feel like its a little uncomfortable. My hands are small, and wrapping it around the grip to make sure I hit the safety is kind of awkward.

I initially thought it was just the size of the grip until another girlfriend of mine brought up the grip safety.

Just wondering what other ladies think. Does it bother you? Do you love it? Did you get used to it?

    Nice pistol!

My size 8 hands can wrap around most pistols and revolvers easily. And I've shot a few Springfield pistols (mostly .40 caliber) as well as 1911s. So grip safeties have never posed a problem for me.

Don't know if this gunsmith can help you (like maybe shave off some of the XD9's polymer grip to make it fit your smaller hands?) but give him a call or email him. He might be able to offer a workable solution.

I have small hands and had no problem with a 1911. But, I have a hard time with a Glock 23.

It was because of that very safety in the grip (as well as the other two safeties on the XD-9) that I purchased this firearm. The designers borrowed features from three different sidearms: Remington 1911, the German Walther and Glock.

The grip safety gave me conniptions at first attempts to rack the slide, but after the initial frustration, it's second nature now. All I needed was a "Just Do It" attitude. That was very helpful.

Hope you get accustomed to your new XD soon and start thinking, why did I ever think the grip bothered me? ;-)

KR H: Haha it would be nice to start thinking that someday SOON! :P

Ldy: I should have someone check out my grip... good point! And I do feel you on the thumb safety! I have encountered that before, where I needed my other hand to free it! Hahah!!!

Your strong hand should contact the gun something like this...the grip safety on the XD should be depressed by the web of your hand

My mom shoots an XD 9mm service model for competition. She also had a problem fully actuating the grip safety. I worked with her a bit in an attempt to get her hand position right. It just wasn't happening. I think she also had problems with the safety on my xd 40 service. The safety police won't like this, but I removed her grip safety and tig welded some material into the curved part and then shaped it to look factory. I probably added 3/16" of material. It now works great. It worked fine for me as well. No one notices the difference until you hold her gun up next to mine. I don't like the ideas of modifying the frame of the gun. I can always grind down the safety or replace it.

9mm: When I hold it, it looks identical to your pic. Its probably just my mind overthinking that there is a safety I must engage... and that a fine looking fun ya got there! I wanted an M&P but they were sold out!

CGT80: Im too cautious to get rid of a safety. If I cant get comfortable then maybe I will just pick up this -

Thank you, I lucked into it through a thread here...it was just $419.

It does sound like you might be overthinking it. As long as the tang is over the web of your hand, the backstrap will be sitting in the pocket of your hand and the grip safety will be depressed enough to disengage it

Actually I didn't do away with the safety. I should have stated I removed it, added material so that it does not curve in as far, and then reinstalled it. It functions just as the stock grip safety on my xd, but it is slightly easier to push it in. My mom just doesn't have enough meat in that part of her hand to always push the safety in fully when she grips the gun. To rack and shoot the gun, you still need to have your hand on the back of the frame.

                          hello ladies...

alot of us competition shooters shave material off the catch on the grip safeties on our 1911's so that it engages with even the slightest pressure. im not familiar with the XD platform, but im sure the same can be done with those. take it to a 1911 smith (i can recommend the nearest competent one in your area if you need one) and tell them to take off material so that it engages with minimal pressure.

you can also have it pinned down so it is permanently engaged, which is what we do with our 2011's. just a matter of your preference in the balance between safety and comfort.

                          cheers!
