    Rock Island 1911

Ok, I admit I'm no woman, however as I was showing my wife my personal "wish list" she saw the 1911 and loved the look of it and wants one for herself, now I'm not going to persuade her away from a gun she actually thinks is "pretty" so I wanted to get your opinions on it

    Things I'm looking for is

1.fit on smaller hands, and whether there are adeqaute mods for that.

2.The levels of recoil, its fine for me but I'm like twice her size

    3.any other factors to consider

I was looking at the 9mm if that helps. Thank you!

If a 9mm too much how about a .380? The colts make appearances in the FS section from time to time.

You know their 9mms aren't on the roster yes?

Take her to a gun range that rents handguns and rent different ones for her and you to try out. Remember, in a stressful situation, even officers don't get all their bullets on target, but the ones that do hit the target should count.

People have bought their .38super and ordered the 9mm uppers before... their .45 is all steel and not bad in the recoil dept.
I have an old Colt 9mm Gov't and it's one of my fave range toys (super easy follow up shots etc).

Interesting... will that conversion work for the .45 as well?

nope... not easily as the 45 has a different ejector than the 9mm/.38super

Shoot like a girl...if you can

Don't underestimate your wife. My bride loves 1911's. Remember they are single stack firearms, so they have a narrow grip. The triggers are available in different lengths. And 45acp just isn't that bad *** in an all steel gun. Come on, it is the 100th birthday for the 1911 get her one (and a matching one for you). Also consider getting a .22lr conversion for practice.

My wife loves 1911's because they are an easy fit for her hand, however she does not like the 45acp much. So I bought her a 1911 in 9mm. She has fired a friends rock island in .38super/9mm and loves it. His has had extensive work though. Best to let your wife try a number of guns and pick what she likes.

Being female, I'm qualified to answer

The 1911 is my favorite, but I was curious -- have either of you shot the particular RIA model you mentioned?

If you're concerned about the recoil of the gun chambered for .45s, try SWC reloads in the 175 gr, 185 gr, or 200 gr rounds as alternatives to standard ball ammo. That is, of course, she's not completely new to shooting.

If she's a beginner, I'd let her take her time with rimfire and then work her way up to see what she's comfortable with.

Rock Island is fun...but for her, try an EMP.

she is new to shooting, I'm taking her out soon with a .22 to get her used to shooting, her being even interested in a gun is a big step, so I wanted to make sure she had one she wanted. we just put down for a RIA 38 super. the guy at the counter was telling me the new RIAs has a standard barrel so it'll be easier to get it barreled down to 9mm. IMO I don't think the 9mm will be too bad for her...

Have one in .45. The wife is fine with the recoil but finds the pistol too heavy for her liking.
