    Womens Training in Sac Area??

    Hi Ladies,

I'm hoping I might pick up some good advice for a group of women that want to take a basic/beginning handgun course in the Sacramento area. My wife, along with a group of other women in the area would like to all take a basic handgun course together with a great instructor. Some of the women have had a chance to shoot a little with their husbands and a couple have not shot at all...but as their husbands have now purchased handguns because influence from those of us that have been avid shooters, they have decided that it would be smart of them to take a course together to become familiar and comfortable. So, do any of you have any recommendations for a non-intimidating, good course in this area? Thanks in advance for any input and suggestions!!

    You're in luck!

There's a Calgunner on here who I have had the pleasure of meeting and know that he is both patient and a Well of Knowledge

9mmephiphany is his CGN handle. He understands both Bullseye and IDPA/IPSC, so you'll have a well-rounded instructor to help you in whatever pistol discipline you would like to learn.

    Have fun!

I'll go ahead and put in another vote for "9mmepiphany". He's a really good guy with a great teaching style. He is not intimidating at all and would be perfect for a group of females.

I'm a 24 year old female and he taught me how to shoot. He's incredibly patient and good at explaining/showing basics all the way up to advanced techniques. He's got a good sense of humor but doesn't "demean" or "preach" like I've seen other instructors do. Best of luck!

I would be interested in joining such a class, depending on the dates & format.

I think all of you will have fun with 9mm. We took pics when I was at SacValley with a few GFs of mine when 9mm was walking us through on the Action Pistol range. The thread is probably ancient on here, but it was started by NorCalMama if you want to review it.

I noticed that my name had been mentioned...thanks for thinking of me.

I am available for group lessons and usually teach out at SacValley in one of the member bays.

I have been instructing for quite some time and my style is very lowkey with an emphasis on safety and communication. I've work with clients as young as 10y.o. (she was actually an outstanding student) as well as grandmothers of clients.

If you are interested, please send a PM and we can discuss what you would like covered during a class, class size and timeframes. I've taught everything form basic safety/orientation, through IDPA/USPSA Fundamentals (shooting quickly and accurately) to self-defense and carry.

I'm retired a LEO, who can teach both the revolver and the semi-auto pistol

stacym - not to worry, we won't forget about you. We'll post what we come up with, in case others might want to join us,...or feel free to PM me also

Another plug from me for 9mmepiphany. The guy is great and is our family go to guy. I first went out with him and had a great experience got to learn a lot and shoot different styles of pistols which helped me in my purchasing decisions. Before purchasing anything I got my wife a session with him and she loved it too. Loved his style, demenor, and focus on teaching. She will get back to 9mmephiphany after she isn't pregnant anymore :-) sometime after June/July. Good man 9mm is and great pistol instructor. Drop him a PM and set something up.

                Hi all,

I would highly recommend 9mmE as well. He's very patient while teaching fundamentals and puts things into metaphorical contexts familiar to the trainee. The BKMs and techniques he teaches are effective and generally accepted practices yet tailored to each individual.

It's also important that he stresses safe gun handling in the course of developing skill sets. Skill sets range from basic handgun grip and trigger control to more advanced tasks like quickly engaging from a holster (including the push-out) and moving targets (or shooting while moving). 9mmE teaches all levels of skill.

As a bonus, he's got a great sense of humor that makes the time fly during the lesson.

The Cordova Shooting Center offers a women's handgun class every month: http://www.cordovashootingcenter.com...ass%202010.pdf.

Not trying to take any potential clients away from 9mmepiphany, just throwing another option out there.

ETA: I've actually met 9mmepiphany last year at Sac Valley during a Calguns Meet n Shoot. Great teacher and a fun guy to be around, you can't go wrong with him.

My very first time holding a handgun was with 9mmepiphany. He was great. He broke down pretty much any question I had and worked with me on what I wanted to learn. He was very patient with me. I feel confident in that I still am doing most of the technique correct even after 4-5 months since my only lesson with him.

He was a great instructor and a great guy. Can't go wrong with 9mmepiphany.
Also, if you get to go to one of the member bays out at sac valley that 9mm was talking about, it's pretty cool. It's like your own personal range.

www.StoneCobraTactical.com tried to put on a womens only class last year. Problem was not enough women signed up. Don't let the name of the school or their law enforcement backgrounds fool you. The instructors at SCT are very down to earth, friendly instructors. Very non-intimidating. Just about every course I have taken from them has had a woman or two in it, and they did just fine. In fact in the handgun course I took from them one of the women won the skills challenge/competition at the end of the course and she had every single guy in the class rooting for her like they were her big brother. Nothing even remotely intimidating about the course.

You could contact Jason over at SCT, and he might be able to scheduel a private course for your wife and her friends. Or they could all just sign-up for the same course and then maybe one or two men also signup but for the most part it is a womens only course.

Most of SCTs courses are held at Sacramento Valley Shooting Center just outside Sacramento, and they are usually about $150 per student. You bring your own weapon, ammo, and any gear the course description says is required.

If they are a first time shooter remember to educate them on proper apparel. Non-open toed shoes, socks, full length pants with lots of pockets, and top that covers sensitive skin, a brimmed hat like a baseball cap, and eye and ear protection. They are not yet aware of how a hot casing feels against sensitive skin, so the temptation to dress cute rather than smart is going to be an issue for untrained. Even after you warn them, every once awhile a new female shooter will refuse to listen and have to learn the hardway. Seriously sucks for them.

There is one course that's coming to Sloughhouse towards the end of April. It is not a dedicated women's only course, but female shooters who have taken this course in the past were very happy with the training they received. Here is the After Action Report from a female students who took both, the basic and later the intermediate-level course.
