When did you first shoot, and why...?

    Hello All,
It's been almost a month since the last post in this sub-forum, so my apologies if this seems a bit trivial...

I saw in another thread people talking about when they first touched a gun. It made me wonder what the experience was for the women on this site?

For me, although my dad let me shoot his .38 when I was a kid, shooting was something my brother did with my dad, not me. Fast forward 112 years and my dad dies with a bunch of guns. I asked my brother if I could have one of the handguns, sort of to remember my dad by. So, my dad passed me his Walther PPK. And it sat in an unlocked bag on my shelf. Fast forward a bit, and my 3rd sort of up close and personal experience with a jerk scared the snot out of me, again. And, I later remembered that I owned a gun, but had no idea what to do with it. So... Training, training, training, open hand and handgun. Making me appreciate #NotMeSD quite a bit.

How about you? How did you get "into" handguns? Parents? Spouse? Military/LEO? Scared into it? Other?

And, are guns fun for you?

They certainly weren't for me, but as I got better and went to Front Sight, and shot IDPA, it WAS fun. But, I still never forget why I am doing all this training...

    You?

Back in the 80's a gentleman friend of mine took me to an indoor pistol range. It was exhilarating but loud! Still has the same excitement today, I'm used to the noise and it is absolutely my favorite hobby.

      First

My Dad, who taught me when I was...10? 12? Its a long time ago. We hunted pheasant together; those were some great bonding times. Handguns were there but not shot much. When the folks went out to their monthly card party I was left alone with a dog and a loaded shotgun for self-protection. It was a different time, the 60's...

My first job out of college was in another state and I bought a revolver for protection on the road. Didn't shoot it much beyond a box of .38 spl. to ensure it worked. Those teeny Ruger grips felt pretty unstable.

In today's world? Many training classes later I favor handguns for self protection, plus they are a TON of fun to shoot. I am at the range a lot, mostly teaching but I do get to shoot for personal training/pleasure at least monthly. And I still have that revolver. Custom grips make it a joy to shoot.

        When Did I First Shoot?

I don't remember exactly but I know I was really young. My father was a Deputy Sheriff so we always had guns in the house. Well, in "The Closet." I remember one of his buddies took me shooting once because I was uncomfortable around them. I don't know why my dad never took me cause he took my brother. Anyway, I went shooting periodically with friends. When I met my husband, he belonged to a sportsman's club so we were at his range a lot. I later joined the female's trap shoot league and loved it. Now we just shoot whatever whenever. Currently, I'm working on getting my CCW. Funny where life takes you.

One of the best gifts my husband (Cannon) gave me, was the appreciation of firearms. The other of course was himself. RIP my love. Always in my heart.

It all started with my dad and a BB gun. We would shoot cans. We also rode dirt bikes. I must have been 8 years old when Dad took my brother and I riding in the sand pits. During rest time, Dad brought out his Ruger .22 and a Rossi 38sp. We set up some cans and he taught me more about gun safety and shooting. Dad was the best!

In the early 90's, He gave me my first handgun, a Taurus 38 sp.
Went to the range a few times and put it away in the closet for years.

Then when our illustrious (NOT) Gubnor, got elected and started talking about gun laws along with Beto coming for the AR's, I starting getting interested again. I wanted an AR pistol in 9mm before it was too late to get one.

So began the search, and I settled on a CA7 Bolt. It was a labor of love. Hard work to shoot that thing.

Bought a CMMG 9mm upper and maglocked the pistol. It shoots smooth.
Love at first sight. Now I want to take tactical training classes and learn my weapon. However, it is very hard to find a class that will allow the use of an AR pistol. So, I suppose a few more private lessons will have to do.

Perhaps a carbine is in my future in order to get the training I want.

My next wish list item is a Glock 34 competition pistol, soft shot, little recoil, straight shooter.

For some reason, range trips relax me.

            Thanks for thread OP!

I am not a lady but I will speak for my daughter. I taught her and her two brothers how to shoot when they were young teenagers. That was her first experience with firearms. The fact is, she picked it up quicker than her brothers and always shot a bit better than they did.
My guns will be divided up evenly between the three and she will get just as many guns as each of her brothers.

She has not shot for quite a while but I recently gave her three of the handguns that were on her inheritance list. She has her FSC and her husband has a gun safe so there was no problems giving her the guns.
The Wuhan fiasco has kept me away from the range lately but she is anxious to go with me on my next trip.
These are the guns I gave her:
                      9mm Taurus PT99 satin nickel
                      My original 4" stainless GP100
                      S&W 4" Model 25-5 in .45 Colt

She loves the GP100 and can't wait to shoot it.

My kids are in their forties now and I have always had close relationships with all of them. I consider myself to be a lucky man for that.

Without a link, and not having been to the Center-Fired Rifle forum that I recall, I thought it was quite the non sequitur...

I expect there are women all around you, Mr. Blue. Only the really dumb ones use a Screen Name that suggests being female. (Yes, I am one of them... If I only knew then what I know now... )

Before we got married, my wife's first time was with me. I had myself just started exercising my 2A rights, and understanding the need for self-defense was always present. So, I took her to the range. We were just about to go inside, and she got really scared and started crying in the car. So, after she composed herself (it took some minutes), we went inside, and I explained the situation to the lady behind the counter.

The counter lady was, fortunately, very understanding and assigned us a lane adjacent to the wall, so that there would be shooters on only one side. My then-girlfriend asked me to place my hand on her back to brace her while she shot, so that was done. She picks up my S&W Model 29 with .44 Special rounds in it, aims at the target (4 yards) and pulls the trigger.

                            BULLSEYE.

That's right, my then-girlfriend, and now wife, nailed it dead-center the first time she ever pulled a trigger. THAT'S MY GIRL!!

She then took a second shot and hit about 2" high, and I asked her about that. She said that she did so purposefully so that she could see if the first time was an accident, so she picked a different point of aim. Subsequent range trips have proved that she has "the gift".

Should anyone break into our home, they're gonna get a big surprise...either from me, or possibly worse, from *HER*.

By the way, she's standing over my shoulder as I'm writing this, giggling and offering tech-writing improvements as I type this. :-)

this happened during obama's panic time. wife and i talked about buying firearms for home defense. wife had zero experience with firearms and i had veeery little.

both of us invited my sister's entire family to enroll in basic pistol class and they agreed. we all had a good time and now all are a pride owner of sig (except for their one minor children who loved the glock).
