Just curious how this event turned out. Any feedback? I would be interested in bringing my GF to one of these events if it is a recurring event.

Yes, the San Jose Outreach is a recurring event, held every second Saturday, which will continue for the rest of this year, and you, your GF, and any other newbies you'd care to bring, are welcome...... : )

After the December event, we will have to shut down the Outreach programme, or, possibly, keep a modified version of it going on a much smaller scale. As utterly absurd as it may seem.....and it is a high quality absurdity, to be sure......beginning on 1 Jan of the coming year, it would then be a crime for anyone to give another person a few rounds, without the rounds being subjected to a ''transfer' procedure by a 'licensed dealer'.

As it has been, we've provided the use of rifles/handguns and supplied a reasonable amount of rounds, per attendee, enough for some useful basic familiarisation fire.

Since early 2009, we (the Outreach Crew) have been fortunate in soliciting donations of 22 rounds (and a small quantity of 38spl. and 45ACP, for adult newbies), and/or donated funding to purchase the 1000-1500 rounds of 22LR used per event, to keep the event nominally 'free' for everyone, by being 'community supported' with donations which have covered the actual cost of event 'coffee/soft drinks/munchies' and rounds.

With this new law, due to take effect in January of the coming year, we won't be able to do that.

It looks as tho we might be able to keep some sort of event going if attendees were to purchase their own rounds beforehand and bring them to the event.

There appears to be some exemption in the new 'ammunition transfer' laws for 'official' Rifle Club events, like the various young peoples' riflery groups, Scouts, 4H, etc., but the San Jose Outreach wouldn't qualify, on that basis, as it is an 'independent' event, run as 'non-profit community service' by the Outreach Crew, with range use time donated by the Rifle Club.

        cheers

        Carla
