    Holster help

OK, the owner of the property I live on is a very healthy and active 70 year old woman. I gave her a Colt Agent (snub nose revolver) last year (DROSed to her now) to put on her CCW application and use as her primary carry gun. She is getting her permit in a couple weeks and will be looking for a way to CCW it. I'm thinking that her primary CCW carry will be a purse. However, she also needs a open carry holster for carrying around the property.

Currently she is using a fanny pack and just keeping the gun in a water bottle pocket but, that's neither totally safe nor convenient. I'm thinking that she should use a dedicated gunbelt and OWB holster. I suggested that to her last night and she asked me where women wear gunbelts? I'm not talking about CCW or competition but just everyday comfortable carrying. Do you ladies/women/girls wear your gun belts low on your hips or up on your waists? If you wear them low, do they tend to ride up? If you carry higher up at your waist, do you carry cross draw?

Any recommendations for easy on/off belts and decent holsters? Remember that this gun hasn't been made in years and it won't be possible to just buy a premade Kydex holster for it. Any other suggestions on easy and quick methods of carry when concealment is not an issue?

BTW, she did use the gun along with one of my handloaded .38 shotshells today to dispatch a buzzworm right outside her house. So, this isn't something she wants to carry just because she can. This is something she wants to carry because, she realizes that it is more than a possibility that she will need to use it several times a year and it will have to be on her when she needs it.

    Thanks in advance.

As KR_H can tell you the Sticky works well, but given you want an OWB, do you want me to see if my holster maker can accommodate you. You have seen my new line of IWB/OWB holsters.

Please remember I also carry a full line of gun purses and backpacks. Have a nice leather locking backpack for $35. It comes with a proper holster.http://packinfurdefense.com/products...ns-compartment

Yea, I have two sticky holsters for my SP101 (one dog chewed and it's replacement) that she can try but, given that she doesn't always wear clothing tight enough for a sticky to stay in place, I thought an OWB and dedicated belt might be a better option. Once she starts CCWing in public, she'll probably be looking for a purse or two but, that's a few weeks off and not what she needs right now. I had already thought about going through you for a custom made holster but wanted to know how women who are carrying are doing so before going the custom route.

I like the Blackhawk Serpa holster for OWB carry. I don't know if they make them for a Colt Agent, but they are great composite holsters that can be put on any wide-ish leather belt, like you'd use for jeans. If the gun is light, no special holster belt is needed. They come with both paddle and belt loops and are almost infinitely adjustable for cant.

Here's a link, not for the gun in question, but you can research on your own.

I don't like specific holster belts because they are stiff and gouge me when I bend over. This is typical for women's carry, because belts always wind up inside a curve. Because we're curvy in the middle, not straight up and down like guys.

A Colt Agent! Lucky woman. When I wear jeans (which seems to be most of the time now), the Sticky works wonderfully well. The downside of the Agent being that the hammer can get hung up on your shirt/top so practice is mandatory. I wear it cross draw at 10 o'clock. Not sure what the woman wears, but the Sticky works really well for me.

Oops, I spoke too soon and see that her clothing may not lend itself to the Sticky.

Do you women/ladies/whatever you think is PC to call you wear the belts your open carry gun is retaining on your hip or up on your waist?

BTW, I just got back from talking to her and she was wearing a smaller dress belt over her shirt and around her waist with an IWB holster cross draw at about 10 O'clock. I asked if it was comfortable and she said that she already is forgetting that it is on. So, she might have found the answer for her. I told her that we will have to unload the gun and practice drawing it like that.

              KR H,

I have been pushing Sticky holsters in my CCW classes only because I got one and fell in love with it. Now, I have four and a couple mag pouches too. Also, I carry a SP101 with a hammer spur so, I understand what you're saying but, in this instance, I am talking about a way for her to loaded open carry over her clothing. So, the hammer (which was shaved down before I got it but still has a small spur) shouldn't be a problem for her. We've already talked about the hammer for CCW and I know she will need some extra practice drawing it but, I can't push too much on her at once.

I think I can get a leather holster that is IWB and 4 position OWB that will work as well. They are cheap at $42.

For open carry where pants cannot help provide stability, I do both.
For a day in the woods on the motorcycle with a pack on I carry more at the waist. This keeps it in position, reduces risk of catching on brush since it's tighter to my profile. But it's more difficult to draw.

At home on the farm, where I may wear clothing that I wouldn't wear in public (read: yoga pants & pajamas), I use a belt over the hips. It's easy to take on/off several times a day, goes over anything, and is out of the way for arm movement.

for Women, heavy objects may get rested on the hips or thighs and held close to the body so we can leverage or lower body strength to move stuff. Having the firearm on a loose belt allows for quick adjustment out of the way to accommodate the various tasks that may happen around the farm.
