    Flat bed towing needed..

Any Calgunners in the SF area do towing? I need to flatbed tow from SF to San Jose area. Wanted to start here first before i starting looking elsewhere.
The car being towed is a 91 MR2. I needed tow to a shop down there for a rebuild.

    Let me know! Thanks

Are you a AAA member? I've shuffled cars around using their tow service. My membership is Platinum, and IIRC you can tow up to 100 miles.

Otherwise, a rental trailer is pretty cheap, around $30 /day. Lots of guys here have a truck, myself included.

Where are you in the City?

I grew up in the Sunset. If you do rent a trailer, do it on street sweeping day so you've got a fair shot at parking while loading it. ;-) If you do the U-Haul thing, they sometimes won't let you rent a trailer if the car is too big. Considering I like old Chryslers which are about 20 feet long and a zillion pounds, they NEVER let me rent if I told them what I was going to tow. I usually ended up getting a commercial trailer for a bobcat or something like that. Cheaper, too. With a small car, you'll probably be fine.

If you want to do the tow dolly, be aware that you may have to have current registration on the car. A Mr-two should be fine on almost any trailer.

IIRC AAA is about $100 a year, and you get 100 miles for towing. You can't do it all the time, but you get at least once or twice a year. Considering a rig would cost you $200 from SF to SJ, it's going to pay for itself.

A buddy used to have a flat bed tow rig a few blocks from me, and I've done the SF to SJ trip a couple times. Since we grew up together, he took care of me. Unfortunately, he no longer does this.

My truck thew a serpentine belt and took out the water pump a few years ago. On Friday of Memorial Day weekend. At 2pm. At the I-880 - 680 junction. Had it loaded up with the wife, dog, guns, food and a million pounds of useless stuff you take on long weekends. AAA got there in about 40 minutes and we made it back to the shop in Redwood City in time to get a rental and make the weekend. That was definitely worth the $100 a year...

        Hope this helps.

Premium AAA is $84 a year, for 4 incidents. An incident is any tow, jumpstart, fuel service, etc. The tow is 100 miles. In order to qualify for Platinum, you must be a Basic member for at least one year.

Basic AAA is $75 a year, for 4 incidents also, but tow is limited to 5 miles.

Do you know if you can daisy chain your 4 incidents into a 20 mile tow?

No you can't. It is per tow. Get the Premium if you need further.

Vehicle is supposed to be currently reg'd to. But a tip may cover that. The car does not have to belong to the Plus or Platinum card holder. As in talk to a few friends and family, it might cost you dinner.
