confusion on the fsc?

Hi everyone, I'm new here so I apologize if this isn't the right place for this thread. Anyway I've been thinking of getting my first rifle for hunting this year but I'm unsure of how the whole process works. Do I have to go to the DOJ certified instructor just for the written part and then be able to give the safety demonstration for when I'm at an FFL looking at the rifles?

Any local gun shop should be able to give you the FSC test. Just like the previous HSC, except law now includes long rifles as well. If you still have a CURRENT HSC, that will be fine until it expires, then you would have to re-take the test to obtain your FSC. Nothing special...

HSC is only good to buy handgun. FSC is needed to buy riffle

So if I were to go into a gun shop around here and take the FSC test, would I be able to go to say cabela's or any of the outdoors sporting test and do a safety demonstration there also? Like I said, I'm really new to the whole gun buying process and trying to figure out the best way to go about it since the California fsc page kept talking about the DOJ being present during the safety demonstration?

Except there is no Cabela's in California and what you ae concerned with here are Calif. regulations.

HSC is good to buy a handgun if it has not expired.

Otherwise, you will need an FSC to buy any firearm. Not including military or peace officers, you are exempt from the FSC requirement for long guns if you have a current hunting license.

Hmm my mistake on cabela's. There's a place called McCoys which i mistaked it for. I'm in Chico so the only real choice of a gun store is safer arms but they seem expensive. I haven't gotten to check out down range yet but I'm gonna do that before deciding anything so I was just seeing if I could get my fsc and then do the demonstration for a rifle at any sports store since there's more choices with those in the mix when I'm looking.

Any place that offers long guns for sale can do the safety demo and issue the FSC card. Big 5 sporting goods and other places that just sell long guns have the ability to issue the FSC test and give the demo. You are not restricted to taking the test at a different location from where you intended to do purchase/pickup firearm. Though it may be convenient to do that based on your schedule.
