Safe handling Sign off without proper snap caps?

Now that long guns are in the mix for safe handling demonstration. What happens if I don't have a snap cap for the caliber of firearm that's being released? ie....17 WSM....can't find snap caps anywhere for this caliber. Thanks for any input. c good

Not sure if I can help out much. Last week I did a handling demonstration on a handgun purchase though , and they didn't have snap caps , so they just had me push the follower of the magazine with my finger like I was loading, then go through the rest of the process .

I heard through the grapevine that you may use spent brass so long as the primer has been removed. Not sure if this is true or FUD. But that's what we plan on doing. We also tell our customers when purchasing firearms with odd calibers its their responsibility to bring us a spent case to use. We have all the snap caps for the regular calibers that we sell. The issue is when somebody buys from online an odd caliber and ships it to us for the DROS.

Yes, you can use spend brass according to the HSC manual and it does state that it has to have an empty primer pocket, as listed in the CA PC, starting with CA PC 26840.

        For example:

26853. To comply with Section 26850, a safe handling demonstration
for a semiautomatic pistol shall include all of the following steps:
        ...
        (e) Load one bright orange, red, or other readily identifiable
dummy round into the magazine. If no readily identifiable dummy round
is available, an empty cartridge casing with an empty primer pocket
        may be used
        .

That would violate the CA PC and would be a problem for them if it were to get noticed.

BTW, isn't it nice that the FSC manual is not out yet? The guide for customers is available.

              looking for source for snapcaps

A number of years ago I bought a snap cap kit for handguns but now need one for long guns as well - checked Brownells but no kits that I see. Does anybody know of a source to cover these? I guess we'd everything from .17 cal up to 12ga.

                dummmy ammo/training ammo

After posting my question I poked around and did find a source that looks good - dummybullet.com - they have a very complete kit for $54.00 and a shotgun kit for $9.50 - both for $68.49 with shipping.

It was my understanding we had to print out all 51 pages of the manual from the on line source. Is DOJ supposed to eventually provide copies for all FFL's???

I just checked, the step by step guide is now available on the website.

Yes, you have to print the stuff.

                        Hey dog -
I did buy it and am quite happy with it. It's probably 95% complete - I find that it does not include the .17WSM or the .45GAP, but seems that most everything else is there - or course there will be the occasional weird, rare, odd caliber I suppose. Anyway - yes - I'd recommend this kit.
