    Private Sale Question

I'm trying to sell my Colt 380 which was made in 1988 and is obviously not on 'the list'. I would like a bit of advise on how to proceed.

It is my understanding that the sale needs to be a person to person transfer if sold in California. Is that correct or can I ship it to someone in state?

If I decide to ship it out of state, what is the best method?

FTF only as I believe it can't be shipped in state since it's not on the roster.

You can ship to someone in state in the following scenarios:
      1) selling to an FFL
      2) selling to an LEO who is exempt
      3) selling to someone who will do SSE before time runs out

If you ship out of state and the buyer's FFL will take shipment from private party, your option is UPS or FedEx. Depending on cost it may be cheaper to ship from your local FFL who can typically ship USPS and after paying fees to them + shipping may come out cheaper than you doing direct with UPS/FedEx.

If you ship direct make sure to follow carrier policies if you think you might possibly need to make a claim for a lost firearm. It'll give you your best chance of recovering your money.

        1) selling to an FFL
Why would an FFL want it if they can only sell it to a LEO or out of state?

        3) selling to someone who will do SSE before time runs out
Is doing a SSE difficult? When does time run out?

#1 - because they can sell to LEO or out of state. Some FFLs on these forums do a lot of LEO sales.

#2 - Easy to do, but 12/31/2014 time runs out. For some that is pickup by 12/31/2014 and others it's DROS by 12/31/2014 (depends on FFL doing DROS)

Sounds like there's a fine line between 'hoarder' and 'collector'.

Thanks for all the great info.

I believe hoarder status is reached when you buy your wife shoes just for the sole purpose that you need the boxes to store magazines in that you'll never need because you already have 11ty of them.

Unfortunately (or fortunately) I need a better magazine storage system. I currently have a pistol and rifle bin that takes a while to sort through with the mags in baggies labeled.
