    Wrong serial number on dros

A friend of mine recently SSE'd a S&W Shield. He may at some point in time apply for CCL. The LGS where he purchased and SSE'd the Shield from told him he can just re-register The Shield in current 40 cal configuration vs what the paperwork says on the SSE dros (25 cal).

He got the registration form from LGS, was going to fill it out and send it off with $19.00 check. Looked at the serial number on his copy of SSE dros and realized the numbers on dros form dont match serial numbers on the Shield.

I told him to go back to LGS and let them work it out. I thought I would check here and see what I could learn. I am not sure about just simply re-registering Shield but if that is lawful to do, it couldnt happen untill he gets the serial number issue worked out.

So what do the Calgun FFL 01's think???

He can go back to the dealer and request they submit a DROS correction form for the serial number issue. This will not fix the .25cal notation.

There is no way to "re-register" it directly with the DOJ. If you send in VolReg paperwork they will reject it.

Some folks have recommended a pawn hold/release to change the 25cal to 9mm.

I would recommend first getting the dealer to submit a DROS correction. If you try to do a pawn hold/release with a different serial number you may end up with two separate Shield entries in the AFS. Probably a non-issue, but it would bug me that is was not DROS'ed correctly to begin with.
You think you know, but you have no idea.

The information posted here is not legal advice. If you seek legal advice hire an attorney who is familiar with all the facts of your case.

This is absolutely correct. The proper way that I know of to fix it is for the shop to submit the DROS correction. This isn't the first time it has happened to someone doing an SSE and then trying to put the gun on their permit. It is a 5 second fix so I am surprised the gun shop just didn't do it and sent you or the customer on somewhat of a wild goose chase
