Forms of ID Question DL Specific

    Hi All

Had a guy ask me if he could use a DL that showed an old address but his registration shows current. I've heard of other shops that accept this for the DROS/4473 process but I didn't know what to tell him is right or wrong. I would think the DL would need to reflect his current address to match registration? Thanks for the input!

neither federal nor state law require that you DL have your current address on it. but if it doesn't have you current address on it, federal law says that you must have a gov-issued document that does have your name and current address on it. so, if the registration has the current address on it, that is all that is needed federally for Proof of Identity. This is covered in the instructions on the back of every 4473.

And if the car registration is current, then it would satisfy CA Proof of Residency rules for handgun transfers as well.

Do you want an AOW or C&R SBS/SBR in CA?

      Just as an aside, FYI:
      Calif. Vehicle Code
14600. (a) Whenever any person after applying for or receiving a
driver's license moves to a new residence, or acquires a new mailing
address different from the address shown in the application or in the
license as issued, he or she shall within 10 days thereafter notify
the department of both the old and new address. The department may
issue a document to accompany the driver's license reflecting the new
address of the holder of the license.
