Paying for the firearm before or after DROS?

I was wondering if the dealers are suppose to run the DROS backround check before or after you pay for the firearm?

its up the dealer, some won't start DROS until it is paid in full, others will start DROS after a certain percentage of deposit, and others will start DROS and let you pay on pickup.

Are you referring to the purchase of a new firearm from a dealer, or during a PPT?

I think most dealers are wary of not having the purchase fully or mostly paid for by the time they do the DROS. I think it has something to do with if the DROS does not go through, it takes a huge amount of paperwork and time to have that gun re-assigned to the dealer. during that time, it just sits in inventory and cannot be sold. this would also be why they have a 30% restocking fee in these cases, to help cover these costs.

all valid points, but not really what the OP asked. my point stands that the dealer can decide for himself what timeline payment must be made on a firearm being DROSed.

As others have said, it depends on the shop. We are paid in full or half down to start paperwork.

Not to be flippant, but why would a dealer register a firearm to you prior to it being paid for? What if something happened to you or you changed your mind and the gun was never pick up?

The registration is not finalized until the DROS is finalized at time of pick up.

For the customers we know we collect on pickup, we have them prefill the 4473 and DROS form and they call us up and let us know what to submit them on next and we see them after 10 days.

For new customers it's usually paid in full or a deposit. We have had multiple people just decide they changed their mind in dros which sucks.

because they can cancel the DROS and are only out $25. not saying that many dealers are willing to do this, but for good customers, some dealers will do this as Baboosh mentions.

Like what ke6guj said, it is up to the dealer. Just ask.
