    Suppressor, flash hider or brake?

I put a bullet button on our M1A for when we demo suppressors because it could be considered a flash hider. I was speaking with YHM today and they said they consider suppressors more of a muzzle brake than a flash suppressor and I even found the wording on their website "Sound suppressors naturally work as a muzzle brake".

So for a featureless rifle does anyone not run a bullet button when shooting suppressed? Any official wording from DOJ? Thanks

It's my understanding that "suppressors" (silencers) were not legal in CA!!??
Maybe I'm not following your question..??

The fact that the suppressor doesn't expel gas in a direction intended to combat recoil or muzzle rise would make me lean more towards "not a muzzle brake".

If I were reviewing their website, I would suggest the correction:

"Sound suppressors naturally work as a muzzle brakeflash hider".

My thoughts exactly hence the installation of the bullet button.

Just curious if other dealers more knowledgeable than I had any correspondence regarding it.

For the average citizen, this is correct, but FFLs are able to get them, assuming that they get the proper permits.

In our research of this the CA DOJ would likely consider a can to be a flash suppressor. IIRC, the ATF did consider them to be a flash suppressor for the '94 ban. Obviously, a can is the most effective flash suppressor there is. I had an email conversation with Bob B. at the DOJ a few years ago. He said that a sound suppressor and flash hider are "not the same thing" but a mag lock would make a featureless semi rifle legal if a sound suppressor was installed. He would not answer any more questions.

You did the right thing with the BB.

the only data point I have is that BATF considered sound suppressors to be flash hiders during the federal AW ban. I would opine that even if they want to say it iis a muzzle brake (they do reduce recoil due to the weight added to the firearm) that it is also a flash hider.

Do you want an AOW or C&R SBS/SBR in CA?

I have never seen a can that works as a MB in any way. They do a good job at hiding the flash though. I would err on the side of caution and consider it a feature on semi auto guns.

                  +1 on the BB.

I got the same info as EBR from Bob. Haven't done silencers in years, so not sure if things have changed.
