i have a cousin in las vegas who is in the process of opening his own gun store (doors open this weekend actually). and as a gift for helping him get the store set up and all the furniture needed, he gave me as a gift a gen 4 glock 17. how do i get that registered to me in california? ive talked to a few local shops around me and they all keep saying "well if you can find someone who will do a gift transfer..." making it seem to me like it is a difficult thing to do. do i just need a letter saying it was a gift and have him send it to a FFL and then i pay for what ever fees california requires?

I don't think your going to be able to get a glock 4 into Ca. unless you are exempt from the roster, do a SSE, or have a close relative (Dad,Mom) gift it to you from out of state. If your cousin is in fact an FFL, you can find a local Ca. FFL to do a SSE. Just have your cousin send it to your local SSE FFL. Hurry SSE gone soon.Last edited by DEPUTYBILL; 10-16-2014, 9:09 AM. -
Gen 4 Glock 17 is not on the roster. Unless you are LEO, you can only do a roster exempt GIFT transfer from out of state, if it is a gift from child/parent/grandparent/spouse. In-laws don't count. Siblings don't count. Aunts/Uncles/Cousins don't count. PC27875, PC16720, PC32110
The only way for you to get this is to do it via a dealer transfer and SSE exemption. You have to find a FFL willing to take it on transfer and do the SSE conversion. Probably will cost you $75 - $100 + DROS. Still worth it for a Gen 4 Glock. Be sure the sale is noted as $1 or free, so you don't pay taxes. You need to complete the transaction by end of year.
It will also count as a 1-in-30 transactionLast edited by SkyHawk; 10-16-2014, 10:11 AM.Comment

thanks for the input DEPUTYBILL and Sky.Hawk. do you think it would be smart to just wait til feb when most of glocks current handguns expire and see if they add it to the list then? its a risk, i know, because if it doesnt get added then ill have to keep it in las vegas, where i still shoot all the time.Comment

A Glock 4 gen will never be on the roster! The only way you would see a Gen 4 for sale in California in 2015 will be a private party,LEO, or consignment sale.(unless the roster and micro stamping are removed by lawsuit)Comment

The Gen 4 can't be added to the Roster because it doesn't have the required mag disconnect or LCI.
Also, you can't own the handgun and just keep it in Nevada. Your cousin can let you borrow it while you are there but Federal law precludes him from giving it to you permanently unless it is transfered to you by a dealer in your state of residence. You can shoot it in Nevada but it will still be your cousin's Glock.__________________

Just SSE the dang thing while you still have a chance, and then it is yours legally without worry. Then you can keep it in CA and travel with it by car or plane to Vegas when you go there to visit and shoot. It is well worth the $100 - $125 to do it - this may be your last chance to own a brand new Gen 4 Glock in CA. It will never be added to the roster.Comment

thanks for all the info! for now i think ill just leave it as "my cousins gun that i use whenever im there" and maybe down the road ill bring it over here and get it transfered. or i guess i could possibly have my cousin gift it to my grandmother and then she sends it down to me (through an ffl of course) since grandparent/grandchild transfers are ok. if that sounds like a bad idea or something that wont go over well, please let me know. again, thanks for the help!!Comment

(a) is illegal - you cannot take possession of it outside CA and bring it here; the idea of sending it to a CA FFL was correct, but doesn't work because it's off-Roster, as already discussed.thanks for all the info! for now i think ill just leave it as "my cousins gun that i use whenever im there" and

(b) is really shaky; see the wiki -- http://wiki.calgunsfoundation.org/Tr...us_work-around. I wouldn't do that, myself.ARCHIVED Calguns Foundation Wiki here: http://web.archive.org/web/201908310...itle=Main_Page
Frozen in 2015, it is falling out of date and I can no longer edit the content. But much of it is still good!Comment

well i would tell him to just keep it for himself. but ill just be borrowing it when im in vegas to shoot. he is the one i normally shoot with anyways. i was refering to shooting it just when im out there. and i did mean legally bringing it over via sending it through where ever it needs to go throughComment

thanks for this point also. i did not see that section when i read through earlier. but this is also why i was asking on here before i did anything. so thank you(b) is really shaky; see the wiki -- http://wiki.calgunsfoundation.org/Tr...us_work-around. I wouldn't do that, myself.Comment

Keep in mind that while you are borrowing it in Nevada, federal law restricts you to using the gun for "sporting" purposes only. Don't use it as your designated self defense carry piece.__________________
