Makarov's and C&R

Hi guys,

I have a customer that wants to buy a couple of Makarovs coming from out of state. The C&R list has "Makarov, pistol, Russian or East German, caliber 9mm Makarov" on it.

One of the guns he want is East German and might be 49 years old....does being on the official list supercede the estimated date of manufacture?

Also the second one is a Baikal IJ-70...which is Russian, right? ...anyone know if that is C&R exempt?

if it is listed, then the age doesn't matter (unless the listing specifies a specific year.

C&R stands for "curios or relics" meaning that it can be considered C&R if it is either a curio or a relic, it doesn't have to be both. the C&R list is a list of the curios which are considered collectable due to rarity, etc, but not necessarily due to age. So, you have firearms that are less than 50-years old on the list like the D&D Bren 10 which was made in the 80's but is a valid C&R. relics are those firearms over 50-years old and are considered C&R even if there is no rarity or collectabilty. Mosins and Garands are C&R because they are relics even though there are millions of them available.


so, if either firearm you are looking at is listed on the C&R list, then they are C&R even if they are only 49-years old.

To my understanding regarding the Russian IJ70, the C&R refers to the military version which has fixed sights. The newer make of the IJ70 have adjustable sights which were sold commercially and hence do not qualify under the C&R. However some FFL's dont always know those slight variations and will allow a commercial IJ70 for C&R. However I believe that the true C&R Makarovs are the military versions.
