Shipping a gun for an individual?

The one time I asked an FFL about shipping a handgun for me, they told me that they would have to enter it into their books to be able to ship it. Is this true, or can FFLs simply receive a packaged firearm (listing them as the sender's address) and include it with their outbound mail?

If they can, is this something they are willing to do in general?

I'm trying to get a gun to an FFL in Texas, and hate the thought of handing Fedex $80 for Priority Overnight.

    Thanks!

It will be entered into the bound book.

So, are FFLs generally willing to do this? Any ballpark idea of what they would charge, if they are?

I am willing to do it for people. I charge the actual shipping cost plus $15 for the time, but I can also be bribed. I like Diet Cokes or Michelobs.

From what I was told, it would not have to be entered into the bound book as it is not retained overnight, but as a FFL I would always log.

Each FFL would vary as to what they would charge. I also ship handguns for people as I hate the UPS/FedEx policy.

Agreed! If a gun goes out of my shop with my FFL number now attached to it, I will have a bound book record of where it came from.

Why don't you ship directly to the FFL using USPS Priority Flat Rate with the pink tag signature required feature and the cost is about $25. The law allows a firearm to be shipped from an individual to an FFL, however, a firearm may never be shipped from an FFL to an individual, unless it was previously owned and sent in for repair.

In order to guarantee an FFL is in good standing, go to the ATF website and search their name to make sure they're a legit dealer.

But I agree, if a firearm is left with an FFL, it gets put in the book. It's a CYA world out there and don't expect any dealer to put their license and business at risk cause it ain't worth it.

Look at the OP, a handgun is mentioned. Shipping handguns USPS is limited and for the most part non-FFLs can not ship a handgun USPS.

Well, one of my LGS wants $75 to ship the gun. Another wants $35 + shipping and says that the gun has to go 2nd Day. I thought you could send a handgun USPS Priority or Express Mail if it is coming out of a FFL?

Some FFLs don't know how much cheaper it is to ship USPS nor how to ship it USPS. A firearm shipped USPS can be shipped by any means (except media mail).

The Next Day Air is a policy from UPS/FedEx, it is not the law and there is no policy that a firearm needs to be shipped second day air. If you have a contract with UPS/FedEx, then the policy can change to allow for second day air.

You could ask them if they would ship USPS.

That's what I thought. Thanks for confirming.
