    MAGNETIC CARD READER FOR DROS

Is it necessary to get this or are there other ways to make payment to DOJIf its necessary, is Magtek the only company or will any card reader work? DOJ could not give me a straight answer.

    Thanks in advance!

The card reader is for entering buyer/ seller information into a DROS. You make your monthly payment by typing in your credit card information in the pay invoice area.

Got it. Can this be done manually or only through the Magtek reader?

Can be done manually. Sometimes the card reader doesn't fill in all the info so you have to enter some info in manually. It saves time if it works correctly.

By law you have to have the reader and swipe. It's in the PC. Kemasa has quoted it several times in the past. I'm guessing if he sees this thread and has it handy he can post again.

With the new ids it really doesn't work all that well.. They wear out way too quick.

Magtek is the only one I know for sure works. They have one specific part number. Other ones from them WILL NOT Work.

                You mean this? :-)

28180. (a) The purchaser's name, date of birth, and driver's
license or identification number shall be obtained electronically
from the magnetic strip on the purchaser's driver's license or
identification and shall not be supplied by any other means, except
                as authorized by the department.
                (b) The requirement of subdivision (a) shall not apply in either
                of the following cases:
                (1) The purchaser's identification consists of a military
                identification card.
                (2) Due to technical limitations, the magnetic strip reader is
unable to obtain the required information from the purchaser's
identification. In those circumstances, the firearms dealer shall
obtain a photocopy of the identification as proof of compliance.
                (c) In the event that the dealer has reported to the department
that the dealer's equipment has failed, information pursuant to this
section shall be obtained by an alternative method to be determined
                by the department.

We have the Magtech, and it doesn't work at all. All we get get is "Invalid ID". We have to enter everything by hand.

Is your reader programmed to do a carriage return at the end of each data track or just at the end?

Have you tried it recently? You actually need to try it each time, but the DOJ might have made changes to fix the problem.

We do it each time, and it hasn't worked at all for a month or so. Even before that, the only thing it would read (some of the time) correctly was the name. The address and everything else would be screwed up.

How do you do the programming on the reader?

There is the program and the driver that you can download from Magtek. It only works on Windoze XP and not from a virtual machine, nor with a KVM switch.

If you open notepad or some other simple text program, you can read in card and see what you get. If it is getting data, then the reader is working. You can also see if there are extra carriage returns, which caused problems and I am not sure if they fixed it or not.

We've got Windoze 8, so that's probably our problem, but we'll try the other fix. Thanks

BTW. while the card reader setup program only works on Windoze XP, it does not mean you can not use the reader on other systems, only that you are limited in how you can change the settings on it.

where can I order the Magtek card reader needed for this? I'm finishing up the last few things needed before officially starting my business, and wanted to get the card reader ordered by the end of the day tomorrow if possible. Just wondering what everyone was using for this.
