    An interesting and frustrating paradox!

Here in rural Northern Calif. virtually 80% of my customers have Cal. D/L's with a "post office box" for their address as that is where DMV mails their D/L to.
I'm sure this phenomena is not relegated to Nor. Cal. only and may well be seen throughout the state depending upon locale.

The obvious situation is, that although the D/L is legal and correct it does not display a physical address (required by DOJ/ATF). Customers have been told by DMV that they must must have their "mailing" address on their D/L (and obviously there is no longer any place to include a physical address on the D/L, which used to be the case some years ago).

It has been my procedure to write the physical address on the back of the D/L in permanent ink and photocopying both side of the D/L. I also support that address with a vehicle registration issued by DMV which includes both the physical and/or mailing address.

I have not had either DOJ nor ATF challenge this process. Maybe I just lucked out or they slept thru the audit...

I'm curious what other dealers do when confronted with a D/L with just a P.O. Box on the D/L????

So, now it is ironic that the State whittles away at the right of its citizens to defend themselves from the possible oppression of their State.

You satisfied the federal requirement for identification with your vehicle registration not by writing you physical address on the back of your DL.

As outlined in ATF Rul. 2001-5, licensees may accept a combination of valid government-issued documents to satisfy the identification document requirements of the Brady Act. The required valid government-issued photo identification document bearing the name, photograph, and date of birth of the transferee may be supplemented by another valid, government-issued document showing the transferee’s residence address

You are over thinking it. You have already satisfied DOJ and ATF for alternative documentation by their DMV printout. Just copy the DMV record for DOJ and note on line 20b on the 4473 that the alternative documentation was a DMV registration.

What do people do when these addresses have the "real" street addressing?

        I.e. it's a p.o. box, but it says like 99-2341 Imastreeet Unit 27

Whatever address they are putting on the 4473 as the actual address where they live and has to be verified by either matching their ID with that address or proving they live there with the alternative documentation.
