Any FFLs out there with a CA Assault Weapon Permit?

OK so I have your basic Type 01 FFL. Been in business for about a year now and have established accounts with most major distributors (Davidson's, Lipsey's, RSR Group, Zander's, and a few others). Must I have an Assault Weapons Permit on file with them in order for me to be able to buy non-CA compliant rifles?

DOJ form BOF 030 (Dangerous Weapons License/Permit Application) looks to be more for general public application vs licensed FFL. We all know installation of a bullet button (simple) and 10 round mag will render a non-compliant rifle compliant (assuming the firearm meets all other criteria to be a legal firearm in CA).

Question is, must I submit the above form, submit to Live Scan fingerprinting AGAIN, etc in order to obtain this permit, or is there another way I am overlooking. I have a Large Cap Mag Permit, but obviously this isn't helping me. Thanks for any advice/direction you can give.

I've pondered the same thing for a couple years. I believe this is what Rifle Gear and some other CA dealers are doing to modify and sell otherwise non-compliant rifles.

Caveat though is that the AW permit was only ever envisioned for the trade of registered AW's to out of state buyers. The inbound trade with this permit is questionable at best, which is why I haven't applied.

People seem to be pretty hush about this, because if it is legal to use it for importation, it gives said dealer a competitive advantage over those buying through middlemen.

If the firearm is considered a so-called a-salt weapon, you would need to have a so-called a-salt weapon permit in order to receive it in CA.

I have heard from the CA DOJ that in order to modify a so-called a-salt weapon into something which is not considered a so-called a-salt weapon, your permit also has to include "manufacturing" on it.

Most likely it is easier to use a middleman as there is less paperwork.

Ask the CA DOJ and if the person knows what they are talking about, they will tell you. There is a person at the CA DOJ who deals with so-called a-salt weapons. You would most likely need to request to be transferred to that person and hopefully the person that you talk to knows who that person is (I believe the person recently changed).

I applied and was denied, my good cause was not sufficient.

If any other FFLs who has one wouldn't mind taking the time to help I'd appreciate it.

Its a pain. Talked to Jodi at JD about it and they let theirs go. Too much of a hassle.

Can you expand on "it's a pain"?

Audits? Fees? What was a pain about having it?

I would be curious to know how many shops are in CA with a so-called a-salt weapons permit. Does anybody know how many are out there?

Sheppards sporting goods in Chowchilla had one around 2007-2009. They said they got it to sell to agencies. They said it cost them around $3000 a year and they only sold 2.

Had it let it go. Now I have my 07 and 01 and plan to get it again. It gets expensive quick. Up to 1500 a year.
