Son lives in Nevada where his s&w bodyguard 380 is registered. Father lives in California. Can a transfer from the son to the father be done in California?

Yes.
To a CA resident, must be done in CA, at a CA FFL, per Federal law. Son can bring it to a CA FFL who will accept an out of state walk-in, or ship it; check with the CA FFL to see his business practices.
