    quick question for an FFl

I am a LEO in the state and was looking into purchasing a colt LE6920. Would that be a rifle I need a department letter to purchase? I am not asking if i need a letter to waive the 10 day wait, just if I would possibly need one to purchase that rifle. Thank you for your time

A Colt LE6920 is considered to be a so-called a-salt weapon by name, so you would need to get it from a FFL who has the so-called a-salt weapon permit. It also means that you have to get all of the required approvals. I believe you have to have department approval and there are steps that need to be done in order to be able to do the transfer.

Actually that is incorrect Kemasa. CA Firearms Laws specifically indicate that the "Colt AR-15 Series" rifles are by name considered "assault weapons". The Colt LE6920 is not, by name, an AR-15. Therefore, as long as the rifle is CA Compliant (10 round mags, bullet button installed), he can purchase the rifle as a normal civilian would without the need to involve his Dept/superiors.

If you're in the Kern County/Bakersfield area let me know, I'd be happy to help.

Perhaps you might want to look at the CalGuns Foundation AW flowchart. Appendix B, AR Series. Specifically listed is Colt: Law Enforcement (6920).

Not that I don't trust Calguns, but can you please direct me to a DOJ document that shows this list, because I'm not finding it. Perhaps moot, because as I indicated before, if it is CA compliant (and Colt DOES make a CA compliant version, LE6920CA), he's fine. If you disagree, you might want to take your argument directly to Mr. Ridley at Colt.

I believe it's what's marked on the receiver that counts. In the laws eyes a "law enforcement (6920)" is not the same as an "le6920".

              The specific model matters.

If you go to the CA DOJ web page for firearms, there is a link for so-called a-salt weapons, which has these two documents, in which the 6920 is mentioned:

One thing to realize is that even if it is CA legal, some LEOs might not be aware of all the specifics of the law and see something which appears to be banned and arrest the person and take the firearm. In the end, the person should "win", but it will cost a lot of time and money.
