Do I need 2 forms of ID for a long gun?

I EDITED THE POST to reflect the right question:

    I am buying a AR10 from a local LGS.

They demanded 1 form of ID (I used a CDL) and proof of residency for the long gun purchase.
Or take my business elsewhere. This particular LGS is extremely adamant about this.

Are they correct that the new law calls out the need for proof of residency for a long gun?

Or is their need for proof of residency for a long gun purchase a rule they made up?

    Thanks fellas.

You never need two forms of ID. *

For any gun, you need proof of identity and age.

For handguns, you need an additional document proving California residency. Lots of threads here on proof of residency.

    * well, to be more complete, this is in the usual case where your ID is a CA DL or ID and it has an accurate physical address instead of something like a PO box. 90% or better of the cases, I guess.

Actually, in any case you never need two forms of *IDs*. You need only one ID, but you may need other documents to prove your residence address.

In CA, a passport or other ID would never work because you are required to have a CA ID/DL or military ID with duty orders. if the CA ID/DL is expired, it is nothing as it can not be used at all.

CA demands proof of residency and does not accept a CA ID/DL as proof of residency. If your ID does not have your current residence address on it, then under Federal law, the document needs to be a government document.

Well, I could require you to wear a pink polka dot hat, but that would not mean that the law would actually require it. Sounds like they need to be educated, unless there is something which you are not saying.

Does your CA ID/DL have your current residence address on it? If so, you would need to prove CA residency with some document, such as a recent utility bill or vehicle registration, but it is not required to be a government document as your CA ID/DL is enough for the Feds.

If your CA ID/DL does not have your current residence address on it, then you would need a government document with your current residence address on it, such as vehicle registration. A utility bill where it is from the government, such as the LA DWP, would also work since that is from the government.

That is all you would need under the law.

My current CDL has my proper address.

The same address I put on the Dros form.

I just thought it was weird that HAD TO HAVE a POR for a long gun reg.

NOTE: This was not a PPT. This was a purchase of a Long Rifle from a local LGS.

This particular LGS is a great bunch of folks.
I just don't like getting saddled with giving them documents that are really non of their business. And I don't believe there is any legal reason to give it to them.

Basically. I like my privacy. I don't like the notion giving up personal information unless absolutely needed.

Well, you can try to educate them or you can go elsewhere. I suspect that they are confused, but it can also be hard educate places.

I'd call their bluff and say prove where they have to have a second form of ID/residency and if they cannot and they still require it, then you will take your money elsewhere. There is nothing dumber than making your customers jump through more hoops than the state does.
