    Question in selling my AR

    Hi,

Long time lurker, first time post. I have a few questions regarding selling my AR. This rifle was purchased last year (2013) from a California gunshop. My best friend found a buyer (customer of his). The buyer who is supposedly in Cadet school wanted to buy my AR and not go though an FFL. He has a residence in Arizona where he keeps all his guns. He tells me that since the rifle was purchased prior to the Jan 1, 2014 law, he did not want to go through an FFL because it will now be registered. He keeps telling me that Arizona doesn't have these type of laws and it will not be an issue because California will probably be happy to get 1 more AR out of the state. This is the first firearm I purchased and the first one I am selling. I don't really know what to do. Any advice would help. Thanks for reading

You have to transfer the rifle to the buyer through an FFL. If the buyer is a California resident the transfer has to be done through a California licensed dealer. If the buyer is an Arizona resident then you'll have to transfer the rifle to him through an Arizona FFL.

To do otherwise would be a crime.

Is it possible to just transfer the lower part of the AR and not have the rest of the rifle attached?

The lower (the part with the serial number) is the only part of the AR that needs to be transfered through an FFL. If the buyer is 21+ years of age then the FFL can transfer the lower to them with or without other parts attached. If the buyer is 18-20 years old then the FFL can only transfer it in complete rifle form with a barrel and buttstock.
