Yes, their answer is not quite what it should be, in part because I don't think that all of them are aware of what the actual issue is.

It is not a driver issue, it is a configuration issue, but their just saying that does not help because they are not giving the details as to what needs to be done.

There are two solutions, one is to fix the web page and the second is to reconfigure the card reader. Either one will work. The web page has to be fixed by the DOJ, but you can reconfigure the card reader.

To be quite honest, you are going to get a better answer here as what you can do. There is a chance that the web page will get fixed, but it is unknown if that will happen or how long it might take.

BTW, you would be better off to tell them that your reader is configured to have a carriage return at the end of each track and that the web page should be able to deal with it as the old system did.

This lets them know that you know what the problem is and to not just blame your reader. Replacing the reader will only work if the now default configuration is to have the carriage return at the end of all of the data.

        My latest plea to DOJ...

"My card reader is configured to have a carriage return at the end of each track. The web page should be able to operate as with the old system but does NOT.
        Please develop a compatibility solution..!!
This problem exists statewide with a large number of dealers. Your new web page was not apparently designed to be compatible with readers issued initially by the DOJ.
If dealers are comply with DOJ "requirements" to use readers than an appropriate fix must be developed. "

My problem is, I have no idea how to configure the reader. I have a call into Magtek Tech Support but don't hold out much chance of a return call.
I was able to determine that my reader is a 6 pin Mini Wedge DIN type...I think...
Whatever all that means, and apparently supports 1,2,or 3 track.

Actually, Magtek's tech support is pretty good.

As I said, if you have a XP system, I can help you through the process or if you want to send it to me, I can update it. Hopefully, the DOJ will have a fix in a short period of time, otherwise I doubt that they will fix it.

Also, you could say that it worked on the old system and they made changes, so they should provide you with a new reader because of their changes. That might get a bit of a response :-).

I had a discussion with Magtek Tech Support this morning and the tech said that the card readers supplied to DOJ should work unless DOJ failed to make appropriate program inclusions....which they (DOJ) clearly have not!!
I passed along to DOJ Magtek opinions.........
Hope I'm becoming the "squeaky wheel" in DOJ machinery...

                Also:
If DOJ fails or refuses to correct their problem the tech said that a Magtek reader (#21073062...a level 2, USB) should correct the problem from our (FFL's) end.

Magtek should have also told you that you can change the settings to fix it.

Well, I think I've received the final word from DOJ regarding card readers!

Basically, they've indicated it ain't their fault the "readers" don't work with the new system and to quit bothering them and go buy a new one. They didn't even have the class (perhaps knowledge) to suggest which "new" ones work with the DES.

In other words their web programmers can't figure out how to make the readers work and they are not smart enough to say that you can re-configure the reader so that it can work.

It is their fault that it does not work as they can make the web page read the data with either one carriage return at the end of all the data or at the end of each data track.

                        That about says it!!

My feeling is that they realized they screwed up, don't want to admit it nor try and either fix the problem or tell anyone else how to fix it.

I just sent DOJ the following question:

Can you confirm for me that DOJ will make no changes to the DES that will allow originally issued card readers to work properly???

We'll see what sort of response that elicits...!
