    Transfer Firearm to Texas Resident

I have an off roster Pistol that has been in my possession since 2004 when I purchased it from my father. I want to transfer it to a friend in Texas. He told me that you can do transfers there without going to an FFL. I read up on it but cant find a clear answer. Can I give it to him when I drive there and just do the CA DOJ "Notice of no longer in possession" form when I return. Penal code 28000. There is an area about transfering the firearm to a person in another state. Any info is appreciated. Thank you.

Federal law says firearms crossing statelines must go through an FFL in the recipient's state

Yes, Halifax is right. You may ship the firearm to your friends FFL and if you wish may fill out the no longer in possession form. But federal law is clear about it, PPT must be done between residents of the same state or it has to go through a dealer.

If you go visit him in Texas, the two of you go to a gun shop together, and probably pay $15, then walk out 9 minutes later.

Ok thanks for the replies. Makes it alot easier to do the transfer knowing for sure what we have to do.

You should confirm that. I can say with certainty, that's how it would work in Virginia.
