    Proof of Residency Question

I recently purchased a Sig Sauer SP2022, and just realized that I don't have a readily available Proof of Residency to bring in for picking it up.

Just some information on my current situation:

▪I live with my girlfriend, and the house and mortgage are in her name.
▪PG&E is also in her name.
▪Our vehicle registrations both have only our P.O. Box address on them.

The main issue is that the town where we live is defined by the Post Office as rural, and even though I live literally across the street from the Post Office, we don't have mail delivery at our home address. Therefore, all of our bills only show that address on them.

I would really appreciate any advice as to what is an adequate Proof of Residency given my situation.

If you have AAA go there and they can change your vehicle reg right there for free and you can add your actual address.

Or just make up a lease agreement. This only works though if your ID has your correct address. If it doesn't, go to the DMV and print out an Information Request Form for $5 and put your actual address on it. The combo will work for incorrect IDs.

My ID has my PO Box on it. They didn't say anything about that needing my physical address.

I think I'm going to have to do a rental agreement. Would I need anything to bring with that?

We are now talking about two different laws.

All names and residential addresses have to be matching. Your ID alone is not enough to pick up the gun, only enough to start a DROS. You are allowed to use a government issued document to supplement your ID to act as an ID correction. This is federal law and there is a separate box on the 4473, for the dealer to fill out, when cases such as this arise. The Feds will only take a small handful of documents; utility bill from a public utility company (mailing address doesn't matter, the service address is what matters), vehicle registration, tax documents, DMV information request form, Guard card, FFL 03 are some of the documents that can do this.

California has a separate and unrelated additional document called the Proof Of Residency. That is also a short list of things that can act as the Proof. The DOJ lists it on their website: http://oag.ca.gov/firearms/resprf

Some documents can act as both such as a guard card, DMV vehicle registration, utility bill from a public company, or a license from the government like an FFL 03 or a Guard card.

But all address have to be matching.

Is it possible your FFL will let you skate by? Sure, but if they do they take the risk of getting in trouble with Big Brother.

So my best bet is to go get a new copy of my registration with my physical address on it?

They never said anything about the federal law. Would this cause my NICS to fail or anything like that?

I'm just trying to avoid any hiccups when I go to pick it up.

And again, I sincerely appreciate your input.

The vehicle registration with a correct address on it will correct the ID and act as a proof of residency.

No, it wouldn't affect your NICS check.

You can call the shop beforehand to be on the safe side. One of two things would happen if you don't correct the address on the license; 1) they'd turn you away until you have an ID correction 2) they'd be incompetent and accept it and have some tough questions to answer on their next audit. Obviously the latter is not desirable so option 1 is more likely.

May I ask which shop? If it is a big chain like Big 5, Turners or Bass Pro I'd be shocked if they don't catch it.

Hopefully this sheds some more light, the following link is a 4473 form:
http://www.atf.gov/files/forms/downl...f-f-4473-1.pdf. Box 20B on page 2 is secondary documentation of identification. This is the box we use to explain what document is being used to correct the ID. Page 5 tries to explain it.

look into real street addressing from your post office. It gives you a real address instead of just a box.

Just curious- would a US Passport help?

Negative, you need to show proof of California residency. A United States Passport does not list your address or state of residence.

It's not a corporate store like Big5 or anything. They do have a couple stores that are a few hours apart though. I'll probably try and make time to go to the dmv and get a new copy of my registration.

For guns, a US passport will never do anything.
