Greetings!
I've been working on getting my home ffl recently. Got my landlord to approve me operating out of the house I am renting; got the county to approve a home use occupation permit for selling firearms; business license is approved and is on the way.
Now, I'm doing the ATF paperwork. For supplies, I'm looking at obviously a vault type safe (probably like a 50 gun size from costco or something similar. Setting up alarm system and reinforcing doors / windows in the area with anti-kick / break in devices.
Just not sure what to expect after I submit the paperwork to the ATF. Do they run all around the house or just in the areas that we have designated for the business? Any strange questions etc.
Just figured I would ask! Been looking forward to this for a while.
So far my biggest lessons learned are that:
1.) Much easier to deal with county vs. a city; I was fortunate that I live outside of the county lines.
2.) Even if they didn't appreciate firearms (my planning / business clerks didn't seem to), being professional, saying hello to them, and guiding them through the process helped. They had asked me if I talked to the sheriff. I showed them the license paperwork that says he gets a copy, but it's just a notification. This seemed to appease them. Originally, they were asking me to bring the FFL license in, which obviously won't work till the home use / business license is approved. And then they were asking about the CADOJ stuff, which I explained is the same boat as well.
3.) Helps to have a LE buddy to do your prints. I just had my co-worker print me at work, so that saved some time and headache.
4.) Starting out you have to really consider whether or not you want to LLC. Immediate annual tax even if you don't sell anything sucks; insurance to cover you for liability and property about the same amount as that tax ($900).
