    FFL business near school

I've been trying to find the answer to this for a couple of days now. I want to start a home based FFL business and have most of the things covered as to what I need and the steps needed to get them, except for what is needed or allowed, if I live a block away from a school. Can anyone direct me on where to get info on that? Mainly want to know if it's even possible to sell guns so close to a school, and what special steps I need to take to be able to do so.

    Appreciate any info.

I do know the ATF inspector on my preliminary inspection cruised the neighborhood looking for schools. Not sure what would have happened if she'd found one.

I believe the law is 1000 ft of any school , now that may vary depending on your area , have you talked to zoning in your city ?

I actually live between a grade school and a middle school , 4-5 blocks either way . No mention was made at interview but zoning is the first call the ATF makes before your even on there calendar .

I plan on calling the zoning department today. Should I go in and speak with someone in person instead? Im pretty sure they wont miss the school of they came to interview me. I live on the opposite corner of the school and a few houses down. Pretty sure it's within 1000 ft.

It wouldn't hurt to go in and talk to someone , and have your list of Qs with you . Do you know if there are any other homebased FFLs close to you ? I ask because that also is an indicator to whether your local gov is cool with the idea . Zoning is crucial , some citys wont allow any homebased business of any kind so that's your start. From there its its straight forward but you will need patients cuz the govt. does nothing quickly.

The only thing you have to make sure of is that your customers leave your property with their guns unloaded and locked in a container. If they have a CCW from your state they can carry their CCW gun loaded and concealed.

You should be able to download ATF P 5310.1 for your answers.

That's a good sign ! Get a hold of zoning they may overlook the distance . If its even a concern .

Thanks for that info! Exactly what I was looking for. Atf 5310.1 answered a few of the questions I had.

Now I have to decide between the few names I was thinking for the business. I go by Mike but want to avoid using that in the business name. Especially since "Mike's custom firearms" is a few blocks away from me

I would not agree with this statement. CA does not have an open carry law anymore and its generally regarded that your right to carry openly stops at your door. Not outside on your driveway.

I was referring to an unloaded gun such as one that a customer of the OP would be looking at. Is that still a CA no-no?

I keep forgetting how strict CA is about everyday stuff in the free states. My neighbor and I walk onto each others property with unloaded guns often so we can show off our latest purchase. At least once a week we have a couple guns sitting on my pickup bed right by the public sidewalk.

Still would be a no-no. I was looking for a PC to show but got sidetracked with customers.
