    Question about NICS

    Hey guys!

Been reading & lurking awhile here. Decided to sign up because I wanted to be able to post in the future, & I have an inquiry regarding my handgun paperwork. I asked this on a different forum, but the folks there arent privy to CA BS, so...

Currently on day 6 of the 10 day waiting period for my handgun. I just noticed on my paperwork that it states

    "NICS Status: Can Defer"

What exactly does this mean? Im having a hard time getting any answers through the internet. According to a gentleman on another forum, I have been delayed.

Was this a California transaction ? We have Dros not Nics . What paperwork are you referring to ?

Yes sir. California. I apologies, I'm ignorant of the process.

This is on the paper/receipt you get after making your purchase.

No worries , is this dealer letterhead or your dros paperwork ? It should say dealer record of sale across the top .

I have no idea what paperwork/receipt you're referring to. Not all FFLs provided the same paper / receipts. I don't see a reference to that on the DROS.

Ok, its the dealer receipt, with purchase, item, etc summary.

In one section of the receipt, it states

            "NICS Status: Can Defer"

What does this mean? Apologize again for confusion

If your on day 6 and have not heard from your dealer " no news is Good news " doesn't sound like theres anything to worrie about . If its a dealer receipt don't worry its something for his reference . Like UGI said there nothing like that to reference Dros.

Yeah, I'm just curious, as the LGS has revamped everything since last time I purchased a gun. The receipt is a lot more busy, & I noticed this wondering what the heck it could mean.

From what I've read, you guys get a proceed, delay or deny. Cant find squat about "can defer"

That's right , and he wouldn't have known anything that early with the new system , everything is pending till we are notified otherwise . Don't worry , it would be a question to ask him though if it is really bugging you . Im gonna go out on a limb and say he's deferring NICS to DROS because the 4473 has NICS references throughout and as Ca is a DROS system he is trying to keep confusion to a minimum in his store. Just my .02 cents take it for what its worth . I wouldn't lose any sleep over it .
