Do you have to modify a factory barrel to stay in compliance for the SSE laws? Or can you have one made on a cnc machine or even on one of the new plastic 3d printers? Just curious how that part of the process works.

That is a fine question. Unfortunately the only way to really tell is if you get arrested and go to court. The DOJ might have their "view", but that does not mean a court would go along with it.
My personal feeling is that it should be able to be fired. It does not have to be a factory barrel as an aftermarket barrel would be fine, but I don't think that it should be a prop. If it obviously is not a real barrel, then there is a greater chance that you could have a problem if it gets noticed during the waiting period.Kemasa.
