Must be shipped second day air ups or fedex to yourself. No ffl will touch it. Better to put in hard sided locked case inside locked suitcase checked baggage and declare. ammo can go in with firearm as long as none in chamber must be in container designed to hold ammo. No mag in gun. If revolver none in the cylinder.

I agree. Just take it on the plane (in your checked bag, of course).
I did this for the first time 2 weeks ago and it was very simple. It was actually my first time checking a bag, too.

Not if you fly to NYC...

Put Ammo in a separate bag, just to be sure...

I guess I was trying to avoid flying because I've heard a couple horror stories about people getting licked down at security for an hour after declaring their firearm. Also, I fly alot for work, so I'd hate to get on some hassle list.

Been flying with firearms since you took it all the way to boarding gate and the pilot put it in the cockpit or stored it forward. Never been held up. Before 911 you opened case and provved to ticket agent that it was unloaded then the took it as checked baggage. Now you declare it at ticket counter and sign unloaded firearm declaration and take to tsa baggage acceptanceand xray area and they either ask you to open it or not and you put your lock on it and they take it.

Damn. When I flew a couple weeks ago I simply dropped it right off at the TSA counter after I checked in. They didn't ask to me to open it or anything.

Your only option is to take it on the plane in your checked luggage. The USPS allows you to ship firearms to yourself, but they don't allow non-FFLs to ship handfuns. UPS and FedEx allow handgun shipments, but they no longer allow firearm shipments without an FFL on at least one end of the shipment.

Checking a firearm on your flight is easier than shipping it, and usually cheaper too.
