I am planning a move across country from CA to NY. How do I handle a transfer from CA registration to NY registration? If I bring the gun with me into NY to stay, I am automatically in possession without state registration. Is this a problem? Do I need to send the gun ahead to an authorized person to hold until my NY registration is approved, and then pick up? How does this work?

Moving a handgun from CA to NY

I suggest that you go to NY's website and research their current firearms laws. CA has their policy listed.
From what it sounds like, you'd automatically be breaking the law by entering the state with magazines over 7 rounds. I recall articles/threads where even Fed. LE and LE from other states were having issues with NY.Comment

You need to leave your handgun in CA.
After you move to NY and establish residency, you need to submit your application to obtain a handgun license.
Once your handgun license is approved, you can bring your handgun into NY.
If you bring your handgun into NY prior to obtaining a handgun license, you will be committing multiple a felonies (importing & possessing an unregistered handgun).
It's also a felony to import magazines that hold more than 7 rounds.sigpic

jfifer: LOL, makes me laugh
anbu yoshi and Quiet: thanks for your sage advice. It just goes to show how easy it is for an innocent law-abiding citizen to get criminalized by inconsistent and arbitrarily restrictive laws from state to state. I have read the book "How to own a gun and stay out of jail in California. There should be one written for every other unfriendly state out there.
I have always found it ironic how the most restrictive states also seem to have the highest crime rates. Maybe criminals know their prey is easy picking.
Thanks for all of the feedback. I will proceed with the utmost caution.
