    Dealer Inventory usage question

I am a CA FFL01 holder and am trying to research the legality of purchasing a hand gun that is only legal to sell to a LEO or roster exempt person. Is is legal for me to use for demonstration purposes a non rostered handgun as long as it is not transferred into my personal collection? I am thinking of buying a few different hand guns out of state to sell to LEO but would like to be able to use one at the CA range as a "demo".

The limit is only on transfers, so as a FFL, you can buy firearms for inventory or other legal purposes. Selling firearms out of state is a valid reason to buy a non-roster firearm, as well as selling to LEOs. You can also use them for your shop security firearms.

        Kemasa,

As long as the gun is in my inventory I can go use it as much as I want can't I? Other than I'd have to sell it as a "used gun" once I shot it of course. Is there a law that specifies that I can't use it away from the shop? I haven't heard that.

        Thanks,
        Gary

As far as I know, you can use it as much as you want. Testing ammunition, demonstrating it to others, etc. You might want to keep the records with you that it is a business firearm, just to be safe, no requirement, but if the police check it, it won't be "registered" to you.

You should keep a record in the licensed location where the firearm is since if an audit is done, they (BATF or DOJ) will want to know where it is.

There is no law that I know that stops you from using it away from the shop.

My "Shop Glock" is a Glock 23 that is still the shop's property and is even on my CCW permit. As shop property it can be in the possession of bondafide store employees at any time as long as it is being used for business purposes.

True it is a rostered gun so I could DROS it to myself, but I don't want it. I just carry it at the shop or occassionally I forget I have it in my waistband and carry it around town with me.
