    50BMG Receiver Banned?

Customer just had this sent to me:

    Stripped receiver from this auction:

Customer is planning to build a .416 barrett out of it (http://www.mcmillanusa.com/mcmillan-...al-tac-416.php). Any issues with the receiver at that point? Receiver itself is NOT marked with a caliber stamp.

From what Ive been told, a receiver is just a receiver. No caliber without the barrel. Should be GTG. But im sure we'll get schooled on here.

If the receiver doesn't have a chamber, it can't chamber a 50BMG round. A receiver alone is not a "rifle" per CA's definition. So, there are two good reasons why it would be legal.

... it's a lot easier to reload .50DTC ammo than .416 is too, if the customer hasn't yet considered that.

          Additionally, a diagnostic question:

Is this a .50BMG receiver, or is it a .50 caliber receiver?

Cheaper and more components that are also easier to get than .416. In all reality, the .416 Barrett is a bastard round. It doesn't fit into regular BR shooting or FCSA matches. Do him a favor and suggest .510 DTC to him. But, if he is the type who just buys into the advertising hype, he'll do what he wants and won't listen to logic.

I'll recommend .510 DTC.. He may be building .416 Barret for a reason (I hadn't asked).. He is a pretty experienced builder/shooter so he may have had a reason he was choosing .416. I didn't really think to ask since I don't know much about the bigger caliber rounds myself.

BTW: thanks everyone for feedback. The only reason I was hesitant was because stripped "named" lowers are gray area even though they are not semi-automatic centerfire rifles so I didn't want this customer getting into a gray area with a receiver that is advertised as .50 caliber (not .50BMG specific) from where he bought it from.

I have a friend in the East Bay who has been shooting 50s since the 90's. He built a .416 on a Mc Bros action just for plinking. It's actually a fun little gun to shoot but, it's only purpose is playing around. Hell, he could just get two barrels and chamber the other one in .510 DTC to come play with us at FCSA matches.

Does not appear that receiver has a defined/marked caliber. On the 4473 it could be labeled as multi and its GTG. If the owner builds a 50BMG thats his fault.

Caliber or cartridge markings on a receiver do not mean a thing. One could legally build a 50BMG rail gun or other non rifle on a marked or unmarked receiver and still be within California law.

That is not a rifle capable of firing a .50 BMG round. It is not illegal in CA.
